Think my Z4 is haunted...

Only had it a few weeks but boy is it doing some strange things.

1. Driver's window goes up, then lowers on it's own
2. Driver's seat decided to motor backwards on its own when I unlocked the car and before I'd got in
3. Windscreen demist refused to blow any air onto the windscreen
4. The green lights on all the heater knobs and switches suddenly went brighter
5. The instrument binnacle lights stayed on after I switched off the ignition
6. Windscreen wipers would not switch off
7. Every time I connect my phone the car starts dialling a number

I think someone must have died in it :D

2. Sounds line programmable keys which adjust seat position before you get in car.

6. Sounds lime auto wipers havent been switched off

Can't help with the rest :(

Edit - 1. put windows down, hold the down button for five seconds then raise. Should re set windows IIRC

1. - your windows and roof can go down if the unlock button is pressed down for a few seconds in your pocket, e.g pressed against another key whilst seated.

I've had this happen from inside the house a few times, last time with a full cover on... quite a sight for any passers by and bemusing to see deflated the next morning. It's not on a shared ring anymore and hasn't happend since.

Only if you have a reinhold, gaptech or similar fitted, otherwise they key has to be programmed and unlock button held down constantly.

No 7. grease in wiper motor may need cleaning out.

1 - Another possible cause is what was wrong with mine. Kept randomly doing the same thing, would go auto-up so far then just reverse, Not always at the same height, but always higher than a certain point. Couldn't for the life of me figure it out, and the motor was audibly labouring which worried me it was failing = large bill to explain just after spending £600 on winter rims and tyres... After ages looking at it going up, then down, then up, then down, I figured it out - something was causing the window to 'jump' out of the guide inside the door and it then travelled up on the wrong side of the guide up the rubber itself. Took more effort on the part of the motor to force the window up so the anti-trap must have been kicking in.

Long story short :D , there was a nick in the rubber guide (probably just from age) and as the window neared the top of the frame it pushed the bottom out, the bit above the nick stayed pushed in, and the window went up the inside of the guide. Had to take the door card, wing mirror and insulation off to figure it out ; bodged with a bit of gaffer tape right now, new (used) one from quarry motors (£20 delivered) waiting to be fitted when that stops working.

Quite proud of my first ever proper dismantle / rebuild, but still managed to break the plastic catch on the end of the door lock pin, through total incompetence :headbang:

Got some pics of the offending rubber guide on my Berry which I will post when I remember to download them... And will do a wee thread when I finally have to replace it.

Thanks for all the advice guys

No idea how old the battery is. It's a BMW one. Is there any way to tell, like a date of manufacture?

I get number 5. i think its by design but havent yet worked out when it does it and under what circumstances?

Oh yeah - number 6 - sometimes get in the early morning if the car is cold / damp. When you get in the auto wipers are not auto, even if in the auto position :? This is apparently to stop them ripping if frozen to the windscreen. When i knock the wiper stalk or change the speed dial (which activates the auto setting) to clear the windows they don't go just once, they keep going for ages. Just knock them to 'off' and switch back later.

I love the ghosts in my machine :)

Your Zed just wants to keep u on your toes, just like mine. Go rag it a little, apply a couple of fourm tweaks & you'll soon learn to forget its unique attributes,..

1. mine does this thing, where if you press the key twice to unlock, the window goes down upon opening the door, as soon as you close, it goes up no problems, but if i start the engine whilst its still going up, it decides to reverse
