Hi all, recently I have had a problem when moving slowly, ie, pulling into a parking space etc. what happens is I hear a clunk when I press the brake, it sounds like a metal clunk from under the car, it does not happen all the time and does not happen when I'm driving normally and pull up at lights etc, it seems to be once I have stopped and move again slowly then press the break, if you know what I mean, has anyone experienced anything like this? as any guidance would be greatly appreachiated.

Regards Ian

I had one of the floating calliper mounting bolts on the rear wheels come loose after I had worked on them and that caused a clunk at slow speed.
Didn't notice at higher speed because of road noise.
Item 10 here:http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=LM32-EUR-05-2009-E89-BMW-Z4_23i&diagId=34_1719

Thanks for the reply my friend, it isn't a constant noise and when I slow down I would hear it as it is quite a loud clunk, it only does it when I have stopped, move again slightly and press the brake, does it when I go forward or in reverse, for instants if I pull up and stop then reverse on my drive and stop it clucks.

You havnt had any of your wheels off recently?
I had a similar noise on a car years ago and one of the wheels bolts had not been tightened properly after a service.

This could could be a possibe front rear wishbone bushes problem, the symptoms and noises you explained are the same as I experienced on my e46 330 .
When I took it to the garage and explained the problem the mechanic told me what was wrong without even examining the car and he was right, bushes changed problem went, apparently a very common fault on the e46 .
Worth jacking the car up to have peek.

thanks mate I will do, I will have to take it to a garage to get it looked at also, hopefully I wont get bent over too much :) only thing is that it seems intermittent which may be a problem

Try reversing slowly Lindo then brake, does it make the same clunk? Then forward again and see if it does it again. If so it could be just the pads knocking the calliper, it can happen very easily. The pads can move and make the clunk going slowly but you don't hear it at speed due to road noise. Eliminate this before getting your wallet out. If it's this it's no problem, ignore it or put some copper slip on the pad backs to help them stick a bit.

Yes mate that's exactly what it does, going forward and backwards, do I check the pads just by wiggling them in the callipers? sorry just not very technically savvy :(

Yes, pop the wheel off and rattle the pads up and down, if they move, even just a little bit, that may well be the clunk. Normally the pads are tight and you can't move them by hand, but if you can then that's enough to cause the clunk.

Sorted guys the knocking was brake pads, my garage has changed them to brembo ones that actually fit now, the place I bought it from had put cheap n nasty ones on that did not even fit to get it through an mot, I was fucking lucky they never fell out apparently, good mind to go back to them and give em a piece of my mind

I once fitted a budget set of pads to a Saab Turbo ( fast in its day) I took it out for a fast run a scared myself when the pads smoked and faded!

The mistake could have cost me much more than I saved but I vowed that I would never ever fit cheap junk to any car again!
