The 2JZE and RB26 can make huge power without much effort and produced a lot more than the gentleman's agreement, they would totally destroy anything new coming from Toyota or Nissan (until the R35, but until recently R34's were quicker tuned still).
The 6 speed getrag unit in the Supra from the 90's can take over 1000 whp completely stock - obviously clutch, drive shafts etc aside, the gearbox itself. How many modern gearboxes can do that?
I don't understand the argument of newer is better. Not always the case.
Depends what you mean by better. I know someone who races an A80 Supra in a class they don't/can't up the power that much due to the rules. One of the first things they did was to swap the gearbox for a modern one which is rated for 250kW/550Nm, this results in a useful weight saving & increase in wheel power.stuartinzg said:

Whilst the area under a curve is an important tool in science, here its is less so, why? because as torque deteriorates rapidly the next gear can be selected, so for the 335d at 35 km/h into 2nd and back into peak force/mass, in comparison the 35is can hold 1st to 50 km/h. so the only difference is the loss in thrust as a gear is changed, perhaps 0.1 to 0.2 seconds for the 8 speed ZF box. Thus the advantage of the 35is is the rpm range meaning less gear changes, but with modern automatics that's hardly a significant disadvantage anymore.
The clincher for me though is the xdrive, for everyday performance it's a significant advantage to have, the traction is just immense whilst all I hear from you 35is drivers is the lack of it 8) Yesterday I took one of my colleagues out for a spin, a confirmed but frustrated petrol head (disabled wife and having to do a 20,000 pa commute requiring a diesel estate) and he was gobsmacked by the 435d, handling, performance and most surprisingly to him was that deep bassy thrum of the engine. to highlight the grip of the thing I gave it all the beans, in Sport+ pulling out of a T junction turning left onto a duel carriageway. No wheel spin just traction, stationary to about 50 mph took a shade over 3 seconds (second hand on an analogue watch so take with a small pinch of salt) . We got back to work and he had a big grin on his face, he said thanks for that, really made my day, wow what a car
What I should have also added is that I believe in a head to head down a 1/4 mile, the 35is would probably win, but it would be playing catch-up from the off and that's where the 335d wins in the everyday real world driving experience.

This is possibly the best part of the 435xd. You just wait until MFactory release their new 20 plate clutch mechanical diff in a few months, then it'll be the de-facto £1.2k upgrade for 35i/35iS owners to tame the beast

By the way I should point out that yesterday I pulled into the petrol station and a 435d came next to me, rattling like a tractor
He looked over, and started pouring diesel in, and I saw he was wearing a nice suit, but he noticed he has diesel all over his hands. He had to go get a tissue, then a plastic glove. I could see him enviously looking over at me, smug, sniffing those lovely petrol fumes, with a clean hand
