Think I surprised an M4 driver.......

Well just driving along the motorway road works section at 30 mph and saw a new M4 in the left lane , looked like a young lad driving it :driving: well I just kept at just over 30 so just got in front then I heard him hit the loud pedal..... :D we now just entered the 70mph limit and nothing in front of us. So we both nailed it and I pulled away from him, I was turning off at the next junction so it was only for approx 1/4 mile but the look on his face said it all.. We flashed lights and went on our way ... I have had 2 new M3s and I have to say this 35is will surprise a few people and I have to add we never went over the speed limit :D but 1-0 to the Z4

I tend to find that most people if the know it's a Z4 then they assume it's a 2.0l because they think that's what they come with either because all the ones they've seen/paid attention to before are or because other cars in the same class seem to be 2.0l petrol or diesel variants of engines.

The fact the engine badge is on the side mean people have not a clue what your driving whilst moving unless the know why you have two large tail pipes, one either side which is usually a give away that it's not just a smaller engined version.

I've had a few guys in porches and M3s realise what it is and although they've been gunning all the way before they come up behind, they are quite happy to sit behind and keep up with me instead of next bit of dual carriageway gunning it again.

Even my other half was surprised when I kept up with him on a very straight piece of the A1...........not sure how I'd fair now his engine is kicking out over 700bhp.

Top Team, don't let every one know your secret though. I'm far too sensible to take on a 35is in a drag race.

Yes it's a great little car, it has the same engine in it as my 1M had and that was quick . But with this having the DCT I think it feels a lot quicker.

Considering I was in comfort mode I was well impressed with it and I am still running it in, but it just had to have a little play. I think you are correct in saying people see these cars and think 2.0 or like the mercs and being diesel but get a shock when they hear the roar and all they see is 2 big pipes on the back :D

I have bought a lot of cars over the past 3 years but I am hoping to stick with this one, it just feels like the right car for me ....

I think generally most people think that if it looks like a hair dressers car will be all show and no go... and they prob base it on the mx-5 platform.

I had the same when i had my S2K before, my Z4 an now my TT.. people just dont realise these cars come with a variety of engines (except the S2K!) and they are not all sub 200bhp cars!

Even this morning on the way back from the gym i had an E92 M3 try it.. and was left surprised..

It's very interesting how other cars sometimes want to take you on - great result against the M4  I've found that since I put the 3.0si badge on the rear I have less 'boy racers' gunning for me, once they get up close and realise I've got 3 litres under the hood they tend to back off :D

btw Angie - over 700bhp :o so what is your other half driving?

Hah, good story. I can believe you surprised him, but I'm pretty sure there's a huge performance gap between those two cars in the range you're talking about. Maybe even a couple of seconds - the M4 is a monster!

He's probably had a couple of near-death experiences from flooring it on the motorway, like most M4 drivers have had, and keeps it in Eco mode. :D

Just noted your point about M3 ownership properly (and '14 M5, nice!). So there's not much between these and the 35is in your opinion? That is interesting. Certainly heard a lot of current-gen M3/M4 owners say that the performance is incredible but not really usable in everyday driving.

Yes had a range of Ms but I have to say my 1M was the best out of the lot, wish I never got rid of it , but you live and learn . Yes it is correct about the power of the new M3/4 they are a monster, foot down at the wrong time and you will be twitching a bit  but this is how I knew he wanted to have a go as the noise from them is immense, but he got a shock.. Yes top end he would have pulled away but I deffo would say from a roll or standing start there is nothing in it

Yeah, isn't the M4 about 100kg lighter than a Z4 and has about 90bhp more?
But you're only as good as the power you can put down :driving:

Indeed - try one of these :)

Nice motor  that yours? I can't believe the M4 is 100kg lighter than the E89 :o

Think the M4 has various lightweight parts vs the M3, but still it is a bit of a surprise.

Actually I've made a mistake, looking at the BMW website the M4 is only ~30kg lighter than the 35iS (1572 vs 1600kg).

The 440i weighs 1615kg, so I imagine if BMW had made an E89 Z4M they could have lightened it a bit.

The roof/roof mechanism definitely doesn't help!

Yeah, I'd forgotten about the roof - still slightly surprised though, I mean the M4 can seat 4 adults!

My iS is around 370 on the dyno, not 340 as advertised - it also has 500nm torque "as advertised", but actually puts down more. The gearbox is legendary. There's a chap on the American Z4 forum who has an LSD recording 4.1 0-60 with proper equipment - big M cars should worry.

I had a bit of a traffic light grand prix with an E60 M5 a few weeks ago - bit childish I know but I couldn't resist. I pulled on him until the next lights and I looked over expecting to see a grinning fellow BMW enthusiast. What I saw was what looked like Albanian mafia, looking extremely angry. I let him have the next one....

Then a week ago, same bit of road, I had a couple of chaps almost looking down (literally) at me from an Evo 10. Nice and slowly off the lights, followed by a tight left hand turn, followed by me disappearing with massive "gun shots" as the backend lost traction, DSC kicked in, causing exhaust pops, followed by more loud pops ricocheting off the close buildings, then an almighty crack when changing into second. You should have seen the "WTF" looks on their faces at the next lights....

Back last summer I was on the autobahn, and pulled from a new 991 Carrera - yep, you guessed it. Angry.

One thing's for sure - this car makes people mad. I think it's because everyone assumes it's a hairdressers car so they feel embarrassed. If it was a Mustang with an enormous V8 then they would be in hysterics. Little do they know the 1M engine and M3 gearbox are underneath until it's too late :poke:

Oh that's just great... I love it when other people have similar story's .. It's just like a wolf in sheep clothing haha, yes the pops and crackles are great

The Z looks like it should be nippy - but our 335xd just looks like any 3 series shopping cart - I think it's performance is a match for the 35is - that can create a shock to most!

No pops or crackles either - it's really quite a dignified hooligans toy.
