To me the problem here is not that things have gone wrong (that can happen to any car), but that BMW refuses to fix them.
We have 3 cars covered under BMW's Extended Warranty (my Z4M and M5 and my wife's Mini Cooper S) - all of them have Fully Comprehensive cover with £0 excess. Total cost approaches £3,000 a year (and there's is a VERY high probability that I will not renew them when they fall due).
However, whenever anything goes wrong, I am always being told that it's not included under the warranty. BMW seem to use definitions of "trim" and "glass" that are impossibly wide (the lock on my glove box, for example, or the OP's cupholder, both of which I would regard as functional item rather than "trim"). I've had to fight really hard to get anything covered under the warranties, even when it's patently obvious that they are not excluded by any of the terms of the policy.
