Thick white smoke at startup

The fact the ambient temperature is just over 26 degrees C makes that amount of steam unlikely but it does look like it! It was a very cold dry day then I could believe it more.
You haven’t told us what it smells like.
it really doesn't smell much. Definitely doesn't smell like coolant. There is carbon buildup in the tailpipe. It doesn't seem to make a difference hot or cold. I will be at car in a little and do another video of it when I start it. Thank you

Is the car garaged at night ? If so is it heated? Is the atmosphere cold in the morning ? When the car is thoroughly warmed up does it still make steam at any time ? Whereabouts are you in the world ? 4500ft isn't particularly high, approx same height as Ben Nevis in this country. Wouldn't think that would make much difference

it's not garaged and it does it a lot. Even when warned up. We're in Reno, NV. USA.

What % humidity is the atmosphere there ? Is it a 3.0ltr M54 engine ?
it is a 2.5l and we have very little humidity. We are basically desert. 2004 e85 with 166,000 miles. Was garaged for about 6 years

Has it only recently started making excessive steam ? Have you had the car long ? Does it use more coolant or oil than previously ? When was last service, filters, spark plugs etc ? Does it drive normally ?

I've only had for about 2 months. Seems to burn oil, but not a lot more than my 2009 528. I haven't done a service yet. Probably driven it app 300 miles total since I bought it

Any mayo on inside of oil filler cap ? What's the oil like on the dipstick ? If you were to drive it for 30 minutes or more does it still make steam at idle ? You could pull the plugs and check their colour. Does it use any coolant ?

it's not using any coolant. The oil is dark but clear. I'm going to take it out now for a few errands and I'll record it. And get picture of oil cap and dipstick

So has the car been parked in garage for 6 years with little or no use, you've had it 2 months and driven 300 miles ? Any idea of last oil & filters, plugs etc ? Any idea of how long ago or mileage since they were changed ? If not using any coolant then that's good. Photos of dipstick and oil cap would be good

Hmmmm. I had that with a fiat coupe and it was turbo that was causing that on idle, but a good drive would clear it. Only happened after a long idle.

Hi Don. All good on those photos. No mayo at all. Still think it is steam on the new video. I'd get a full service done...fresh oil, filters, plugs etc. Check the CCV and rubber intake boots for cracks/failure. Have you got a code reader or can someone/garage do a diagnostic to see if any fault codes. Then just drive it, get more miles on it. Keep an eye on the oil consumption

it had no warning lights on. The scanner says p0444 code. If it was head gasket, it will get hot and milky, right?

You're not using any coolant and the dipstick and inside oil cap are clean as a whistle so doubt there's anything wrong with head gasket. The P0444 code is fuel tank purge valve fault. Check all pipes and connections associated with it, check the rubber o-ring on the fuel tank cap for cracks/splits. The purge valve is a cheap component and easy job to replace so personally I'd eliminate that from the equation and clear the fault code afterwards

Thank you very much. I'll check out how to change purge valve and do it. In the meantime, will it hurt to drive it?
It would be better to get all of those jobs done first but I wouldn't think it will take any harm in the meantime. Just check the levels and condition of the oil and coolant each morning before you start her up
