Thesport button, what does it do & do you use it?

Went for a hoon in the lake district yesterday, first one in the car & didn't think to switch it on until quite late in the day. I found it a bit too snappy on the throttle? Almost like to make you think it was more responsive the car delays the throttle slightly before giving it full power.

Maybe it was just because I was dialled in to the standard throttle map I found it a bit weird?

Does anyone else find this? Does it do anything else?

I'm on the oulton park BMW track day this Wednesday so it'll be interesting to see if it works better on track but on the road I found it easier to drive smoothly (though still quickly) without it....

Sharpens the throttle response, when you get used to it without it the car seems quite slow to react but I don't use it very often.

Sport mode is a blast around the serpentine mountain roads where I live, but it's just too much for driving between stop lights in town.

Most of the time it is off, which makes turning it on all that much more fun!

I leave mine off 99% of the time, mainly because I forget it's there until mid-hoon. If there's a passenger it also alerts them to the need to hang onto the door handles :- which can often halt any hooning there and then! :) Bit like knocking the auto stick into 'manual' mode and reaching for the flappy paddles...

If you have an auto, it also changes the shift points as well as the throttle map.

+1
I use it quite a lot. Whenever out of town/commute. It does make the throttle way to snappy for stop/start or roundabouts. But on a country road blast I love it. The extra sharpness to me has the effect of making the car seem 'lighter'. As Tom says 'quicker to react'

Ye dont mistake the sport button the the 'M' button in other M cars. The Z4Ms is more primitive.

Unlike the 'sophisticated' M button in my mate's M5 that takes it from 400 to 500bhp in one refined and gentle step ?

He says it scares him too much to use it often unless none of his family are on board and there are wide open spaces nearby to run off into :D

Sorry, I'm just having a :poke: , but have zero knowledge of how M buttons work - I love my Sport button, but not in town as others have said

hmmmm i'll reserve judgement until i get it on track on wednesday but i think i prefer it without the sport button on.

anyway, gratuitous mid hoon pic:

Bit more fun in the snow  Although I didnt risk going into the second car park lol!

I turn it on when I'm on track or on a hoon, and the TC usually gets switched off if it's dry, otherwise it cuts in way too early on track :P

I tried it once a month hor so back, I don't see the point for the M.
In my old 3.0 it changed the steering weight, which was nice. Just sharping the throttle in the M, it's not needed. If I want more power quicker, I put my foot down harder.

Completely off topice, but I bet when Porsche came up with the new designation number for the latest 911 your private plate went up in value a bit!

i find it increases my heart rate, then if you knock off the dtc your heart rates go sky high

Hoon!! explain please,,

P.S. im old. :oldman:

Hoon - noun : a spirited drive of variable length, either pre-planned starting with a meet or randomly enacted when nipping to the shops for milk / you're bored.

Hoon - verb : to drive very quickly (though responsibly) along interesting roads, with or without Sport 'on'

I rarely use the sport button in my manual, but find it very useful in the auto when stuck behind traffic in the countryside :-)
