These M things really are rather good !

The only argument against that Giles, is do racing teams have to run their engines for 100,000 miles? Or do they usually strip them down at the end of each race (or end of the season in the longest cases?)....

Dunno, who cares anyway, I'll be selling mine with 16000 max on the clock

From what you read these engines have produced a fair number of problems regardless of the 'cotton wool' method or the 'rag it from go' boys. :driving:

As mine was a BMW UK Management car with 1,500 miles on it I ssume it isn't a 'cotton wool' method car! I am inclined to change the oil in between services as this can do no harm and generally seems to benefit engines

The con rod is the only issue I'm aware of and that was for builds up to Summer 2002 IIRC! What else are you referring to?

A multi award winning engine doesn't get that accolade for producing problems :|

oi !!

stop bringing this Happy-Thread down !!!

smiiiiiiiiiileeeeeeee !!! we all drive cars that do sub-5 second 0-62mph!!

my conrod is fine thank you.. =) lol...

JayD & Giles interesting viewpoints. I agree, if you got to 9k before any problems then it was unlikely to be running-in that caused it.

Plenty of others have adopted the procedure that Steve suggests and had great results and no problems.

Me included.

Following VMax last weekend I know how good the Coupe is. Still pulling at 164mph and I easily saw off a C2S and a Z3MC from standing starts. The engine is absolutely singing.

His method makes good logical sense, especially when you ask this question - Do racing teams 'run-in' cars when they put in a new engines?
Hey Giles what was VMax like? I wouldn't mind doing the next one, it sounds like my kind of event.
What did you see on the speedo? I'd have thought you would have run into the limiter at brunters.

:D :D :D

I have no problems with my engine, con rod and all. This is the best car I have ever owned and every trip in the 'beast' is a real event!

I test drove the Z4M Coupe today and I can see why you guys love it.

The metallic sound of the engine is fantastic at full throttle, the car handles very well and it is FAST, even if I didn't can it too much because the car has got 550 miles on the clock and I'm hoping it will be mine, so I was rather good to the engine :) . The clutch is very sharp (even more in sport mode) and needs some getting used to.

The car has got so much presence and the one I drove in Black Saphire with Champagne leather was so beautiful. I loved it.

I want one of these M things!

You going to change your order for this one then? Can you do that?

I spoke to HR Owen Chiswick today and asked them to cancel my order. I don't know if they will return my deposit or not. I will wait for them to call me back on Monday.

I think that even if I loose my deposit on that I will order buy that Z4M I drove today. It's a demonstrator with 550 miles on the clock and has got a very nice spec (Black Saphire, champagne leather, prof. satnav, bluetooth, parking sensors, prof hi-fi and etc.).

The dealer that has that car agreed to discount £2K of the advertised price because of the fact that I may loose the deposit on the 3.0si.

I'll see what happens.

Nice thread, nice comments. I too have no idea what is ever going to replace this car - I am quite sure it is going to cost quite a bit more to give the same thrill.

Con Rod = Connecting Rod? If so ... all six of mine are in fine shape at 7800 revolutions/min.

partly coz the M-board is always a little quiet for my liking, and partly because i have more to add... i thought id dredge this up =)

just a note to say that for the last 2wks, I've been leaving the Monster in the garage for my daily commute and have replaced that role with a 125k mile Peugeot 406 HDi, which amongst other benefits does 700m on a tank and has low emmisions so therefore cheap roadtax.

yesterday i nipped home at lunch to pick up something and as the sun was out I swapped cars, having not really touched the Monster for at least a week, despite the occasional hug to keep her sweet when i went near the garage.

I have to say I knew to expect a shock but jeez.. soooo stiff in every aspect and my left leg had got used to a weak clutch but WOW.. my heart hadn't raced so much since i test drove it then drove it back from Preston to London in March. My 3m return trip to work ended up being more like 20m as I headed off down the south circular with the roof down and a huge smile on my face.. Purely on that basis, the Pug was £1500 well spent =)

Andy, you hit the nail on the head. I also love my car to bits - and all the complaints about build quality and other niggles don't phase me one bit. I think coming from a car history of hand-built British cars means I'm more lenient than most!

You're right about these cars though. They are absolutely fantastic. I drove a CSL recently, and do you know what... I honestly reckon my Z4M is the more thrilling car! I know it's not standard, but ultimately I've not done *that* much to it that would make huge differences to the drive of the thing.

Interesting you mention the Gallardo as well - as that's the next car in my sights also (maybe we'll end up following each other over to lambo-power.com after our Z4 days! lol). I do have to wonder if it can deliver an increase in thrills relative to the price, but I'm a sucker for that V10 howl, so that's almost worth the money alone! ;)

Now get yourself booked on that Bedford day!!!

Andy - thanks for bumping this thead..... nice to revisit your write up.
Right now, my baby has been put to bed with a battery tender to keep her warm.
It's going to be a looooog winter :(

Hey, I've also got my sights set on a Gallardo next, but maybe with a brief detour via an Aston V8 Vantage.

Here's hoping for either...

never been an Aston fan.. a friend of mine swapped his M3 for a Vantage (on horrific finance) and we had a swap day bout 6m ago.. the noise when the exhaust valve opens (bout 6k?) is simply incredible, but apart from that im not sold. little things, but even my dodgy Pug has auto lights and wipers, for 80k id feel rubbish every time it went dark or rained. Its just tooooo Ford. Z4M = 30k.. V8 Aston = 80k.. But the Gallardo @ 80k... i think id move in with it =)
