I've had need to commission bat surveys when dealing with planning applications for barn conversions and suchlike so I've picked up a fair bit of knowledge about them. Quite honestly Carol it won't do you any harm so I would suggest you leave it alone as it is presently hibernating and won't be active again until March and then it will safely find it's way out of your loft.
However, if you are still concerned then I would suggest you ring the Bat Conservation Trust who will give you further advice.

Bats are wonderful. Amazing little critters. They eat tons of mosquitoes and other bugs. They do not attack people. Those vampire movies are not documentaries. They are fiction.

Ah, but that's where you are wrong. I watched a programme on telly about vampire bats and they were going in people's houses and biting sleeping babies and feeding on them.

And the three species of Vampire bats are indigenous to Mexico and into South America. They do not live in England. It's just to cold. Bats are very beneficial.

I was saying that not all bats are 'wonderful' and they do attack people. Not in this country ( yet) I know.

I really like them, especially when they are swooping around on summer evenings while we sip plonk on the terrace with our friends. They always remind me of good times. In return I am happy to welcome them into my loft. I have fitted bat boxes too. They don't use them though. I am surprised that so many people here are not engaged by them. Great little things. Getting rid of them is wrong wrong wrong.

Ooh Fin, I just hate 'em. They swoop round our house in the summer at dusk as well and I don't mind watching them. I just don't want to come face to face with the ugly little buggers and my head must've been a couple of feet from it in the loft before I noticed. *shudder* AND I bet there's more of them up the other end of the long, dark loft.

Well done. I like the fact that they eat loads of mosquitoes. Hell. I'd be tickled if I could get a bat to live at my place in America. Here's what we have in our yard in Walla Walla Wa.

If you are fearful of being buzzed by a winged creature. You don't want these in your yard. If you wear a flowery shirt. They will fly right up to you and check out the flower on your shirt for nectar. They eat bugs as well. Fearless little things. Especially given they are about the size of your thumb. I've seen them buzz our cats. And hover them just a foot or two.

Too many of those sort of hummingbirds and one might be looking for the gym right after the holidays. Or hope they get bigger pants from Santa.

We have a wonderful German bakery/cafe just down the street from our home. Yummy! But it is difficult to say no. I have managed to go there quite often to see my friends for a cuppa. And have still lost 10 Kgs.

Bats are great, not scarey at all.
When I was younger we found a tiny one that looked like it had flown into our patio doors. We tried to nurse it back to health but it didn't make it

We've got Pipistrelle bats in our loft ,had a wee count of them leaving in the summer got to 80 and packed in
Had them for years and havent had a problem also its about £500 per bat fine if you disturb them

I actually feel sick. My head was a few feet away from it getting christmas out of the loft and I didn't realise.
