I booked a return ticket to York at a very reasonable £14 return - the train was a Trans Pennine Express

On the day of the trip the train was cancelled Due they said to staffing problems - As the trip was important I had to buy a ticket on another train at £38.50 one way.

It seems I can only get £7 for the unused ticket - I think I should be compensated for the very expensive on the day ticket I had to buy?

(Waiting an hour for the next Trans Pennine train wasn’t an option )

I assume that you had to travel on a different train company?

Normally you can travel on the next closest service irrespective of the train company, but it largely depends on the company's involved.

Had this myself between London and Grantham. Hull Trains was cancelled, so I travelled on an LNER at no extra charge.

Yes, booked on Trans Pennine - next train was LNER and the ticket wasn’t valid to travel.

The original ticket was only £14 :x
