The three times multiplier on price of the M

I'm shocked to see you can pick up a very basic 2003 Z4 on Autotrader for almost as low as £6,500, which is literally less than a third, or £14,500 less than the £21k I paid for my Z4M

I wonder then if there is a larger gap in ownership profiles than with say, for example, owners of SL350 and SL55AMG, which don't seem to vary quite so much in price.. From another perspective, you have to REALLY value the extra speed and performance of the M (which I do) to pay so much more for it.

Z4M seems to have gone up a little in price recently though.. similar examples to mine (07) with more mileage seem to be around £22-23k, even upto £25k.. might be time to upgrade to that 360 soon after all :roll:

well, i think your simplfying it a bit.

The Z4M wasn't released until 2006.

Plus, i imagine the car you've seen is a 2.0, with a list price of £22k 6 years ago. Meaning its lost approx £16k (£2.5k per year) or about 65%.

A Z4M started at £42k, so if you can pick up a 2006 for, say £20k - its lost £22k in 3 years (7k per year) or approximatley 50% of its value in half the time.


Interestingly, the SL you reference, prices started at £60,000 for the basic model, rising to £100k for the AMG version, and while i havent done much research, i think you could pick up a SL350 for say £17k and a AMG for £25k - but both were available from 2002..

Yes - I can see a 3.0i on autotrader at £6,400,which is by any standards a low price for a car of this quality, but I don't understand the argument of measuring its value against a newer model of an ///M spec car?

Take any car of a lower model and several years older and you can ask the same question. It's just the cost of owning newer and higher spec.

a lot of people seem to be hung up on how much they can or can't get for their cars and also taking the wrong examples when weighing it all up your never going to get back what you paid for it,so i say just enjoy the car you've got and when its time to change your car deal with the price at that time

I agree with etedium, one of the reasons I used to justify buying my first BMW was the 60 percent retained value after 3 years, bollocks really as I paid much more for it in the first place so the 40 percent loss was much more than previous cars I owned!
Now into my fifth bm and I don't look at the losses any more.

Aside being very cheap for a fair spec 03 what shouts scam to you? Just curious as I'm not in the market to buy anyway?

Autotrader is littered with scam right now. Pick any decent car model and you'll find a suspiciously cheap one for sale with just a mobile as contact and usually quite a poor description - none of the stuff an enthusiast would write.

I'm not for one minute saying it isn't a scam, but specifically what aside the price make you believe this one is?
It has a desription that an owner would know, such as wheel style numbers.

Perhaps a Cat D car, or when you call it's sold but he has another one at XX £'s, or maybe the scammers are researching better.

There's actually a dealer 53 plate 2.5 going for <£7k albeit high mileage!!
