The smell

So I've noticed that when I really push the car, like coming near the red line in 2nd, and then shift to 3rd, there's a smell.....not a good one. I believe it might be the clutch wearing and I wondered if this was because of the CDV making the clutch come in too slow and causing more wear than it would without the CDV? Noticed the same hitting the red line in 3rd and then shifting to 4th.

Thoughts?

Thanks, Al

What miles have you done? If you are really hammering it then there will be some clutch slip but I'm suprised you can smell it when you're on the move.

As sammyz says unlikely to smell the clutch given at 'redline in 2nd' you'd be travelling at some speed. You'd be likely to feel it first, either slipping on hard changes in higher gears, or even slipping in the high gears when you floor it on a hill.

Are you driving this really aggresively to cause the clutch to slip when you change gear and indeed are you certain it's the clutch?

Every car I've owned has done this after being thrashed, I just thought of it as 'automotive sweat' :driving:

There really should not be any clutch smell. I only had one good slip of the clutch while drag racing last year (on a real drag strip), and that was the only time I noticed it, and like others said, you feel it also. You may be smelling the brake pads after a hard driving session if you were hard on the brakes, or if the car is fairly new, you may be burning off some of the protectant grease/oils on various engine parts.

Brakes, clutch, hot metal, exhaust gasses ... they all give off an odour of sorts. I've always picked up a certain smell from my cars, not just the Z4M, after a bit of hard driving. Usually makes me feel its earning its keep ;) After spending £40k on a car, I want it to work for it's living! :D

Thanks guys - not feeling anything (other than going quickly) so maybe it's just the smell of being well used. :driving:

BTW car only has about 6,500 kms on it....
