Not on mine just the general exception which to my mind would exclude the ring but then it is saga insurance
 
I would love to do that myself but a combination of skills (poor) and lack of "spare" Z4MC :wink: made me think I better not do it

Likewise - PLUS the massive bills for repairs to barriers, recovery and being charged for the circuit having to close. I've seen people post £15-£30k bills when they've totalled their own cars into a barrier.

Those prices can become quite high & scary, but if some UK circuits have their own way we may be facing the prospect of the same form of 'recovery of costs' over here.

I don't mind if they do this, but I'd want to be sure I could take out insurance against this...currently you can't.

I have 1st party insurance when I'm at the Ring, just as I do at a UK track when it's new to me (or I'm driving a new car, or am with a new TDO).

Luckily, I've never had to claim...and that's in over 20 years, 200 track days, 500+ laps of the Ring.

I have seen plenty of little accidents where marshals have attended, and they've got off with a €100 bill for light damage to the armco that will not require replacement/closure.

My biggest concern (and no insurance available for) is taking someone else out if/when I do have an accident...and is why I don't do lap after lap after lap chasing lap times, and also why I keep mine more or less in a road setup, with no roll-cage, harnesses, sticky tyres, 265 fronts, massive camber, etc.

Yep, it's been an exclusion on all my motor policies for the last 4/5 years. :(

But I think you can get specific cover for it - although possibly only in Germany, and I'd imagine it wouldn't be cheap going by the prices quoted! :o

I've been going since it was 7 euros a lap ! But the last couple of times I've stood and watched , weekdays are best but even last year Monday evening was packed due to the track closure on the Sunday !
Regarding the costs , we spoke to a guy in a Subaru with what amounted to slight damage , seen worse in car parks , but because he'd grazed the barrier he was €1200 out of pocket by the time he'd been recovered and paid for the barrier , this was about 7 years ago so god knows what they'd charge now !
But I'll still be back sometime this summer :driving:

I also agree with not chasing lap times. For me it’s more about respecting the Ring and it will respect you back.

I also suggest getting on it as soon as it opens, that way only a few cars are ahead of you and only a few fast cars will overtake you (thus minimising your chance of accident due to collision with others or oil/coolant spills).

1st party insurance covers the damage to my car, and my car alone. Through MORIS, it works out about £60 per day for £15k of cover with a £1500 excess.

Timing is critical as you say. We tend to make a long weekend of it by driving over early Thursday and back late Tuesday, so we get Thur/Fri evenings, Sat/Sun mornings & evenings, and Monday evenings.

Even doing just those 3-4 hours each day we get 40 ‘quiet’ laps in - the best times being the 8am-9am November mornings.

The insurance thing at the Ring isn't quite as straightforward as it seems! You drop fluids and someone crashes on it, you're responsible, insured or not. It's highly likely your insurance will pay out due to their European law obligations and then seek to recover their costs from you, which potentially could lead to tens of thousands of pounds. You don't have to chase lap times to end up in the shite. A big bill could really ruin your finances (and your families) for many years.

I've been going since the man collected 5 Deutschmarks from you at T13, and seen and heard of some very expensive mishaps. I personally know someone who had a €5k track repair/closure bill and another who had €700 for a minor bump into the armco.

I'm pretty sure German motor insurance covers them due the toll road issues regarding the Ring.

Is it worth the risk? I've not had an incident there in 25 years, a few close ones, but either luck, skill or a bit of both saved me.

For me, the Ring isn't much fun anymore, far too busy, too pricey and there seems to be closure after closure. There was a time where midweek or lates season dates meant quiet track time, but these are now disappearing.

Had some brilliant times and met some great people there, however I do think it's past its best.

Didn’t know about the Armco / repair charges. Seems extortionate to me.

I’d still love to get a few laps in on the ring with the zed though, it’s just the other nutters that scare me. Some of the on board laps you see on YouTube show how bad the standard of driving can be.
 
My mate was involved in an incident last year...luckily the polizei decided on the spot that it wasn’t his fault, and he was lucky that the other driver was German..so that his costs will be covered.

Something in the region of £35k once repairs to both cars, track closure, recovery truck & barrier repairs are taken into account.

It was only a light tap, but at critical part of the track where you’re turning hard left, leaning on your offside tyres, so that a light tap by someone cutting the corner underneath you on the grass, results in you flying off into the barrier.
 
Ive been round the track both as a passenger and a driver.
If you don't know what you're doing, simply keep right, use your mirrors, treat it as an A road that you don't know and leave your ego at the ticket shop.
You have to be going pretty quick to crash under your own steam, it is easy enough to keep your speed under control. Just have to have self discipline and respect the fact you're in a road car. Granted others can take you out and that's a risk you cant fully manage, making sure you're not at fault is the best you can do. Going out early or late helps and picking a dry day.

It's not as bad as all the all the crash videos make out, they are compilations after all.
I'll do it again for sure.
 
If crash barriers are damaged on UK motorways, even damaged tarmac after a vehicle fire, Highways England will claim from your insurance. It has been like that for years now.
 
While I was in Germany from 1961 to 1964 with the Canadian Army for NATO, I had a ride around the 'Ring with my friend in his fairly new MG Magnette sedan. I recall being passed in the middle of the Carousel by twin VW Karmann Ghias, one on each side of us! Obviously Porsche powered, as we could see a bit of engine hanging down on both of them. In moments, they were gone from view. Our other scary moment was rounding a curve at the top of a hill to find a stopped bus full of tourists ogling some carnage in the woods to the left of the track. We were able to stop in time, as we were not going too quickly after climbing the hill. The Magnette was not overly rapid with four persons aboard.

No, I can imagine it wouldn't be - but a great experience nonetheless!
