The previous owner screwed me!

So, just had a call from the garage that are doing the refurb on my wheels, and apparently the previous owner had changed my rear left tyre for a standard tyre and left run flats on all 3 of the other wheels!

I've done some research and it would appear this means that my insurance is not valid, so I have told him to go ahead and get a new tyre, but it's going to cost me £196! Does that sound reasonable?

I'm so angry! :headbang:

Whoever told you your insurance in not valid is wrong and secondly not being funny but its not the worst thing that could happen, I bought my car from a member on here to find out it was a CAT D with warped alloys and knackered tyres and the EML light came on the same day I bought it! you have come off ok tbh!

That's a bit pricey for a RFT

Saying that I would have just coughed up another £500 and bought some Eagle F1's or alike, as most Z owners have moved away from RFT's due to poor handling

Wow! thats a bad buy !! you might have expected forum people to be more honest - but i guess caveat emptor still applies.

I agree with ranski... I would just use as an excuse to use non runflats on all corners.

well ive had her over 18 months now and got all the issue sorted. but yeah just shows you cant always trust the honesty of people on the forum! he's just sold his porsche i think lol

Unfortunately the cost of the refurb alone has made the potential of buying new tyres for all corners out of the question at the moment :(

You could have bought a part worn to replace to non run flat. I've just sold 3 on eBay and all went for just under £50. Fronts had 6mm and rear had 5mm.

MPSS are amazing but unnecessary you can get away with cheaper tyres.

As for 108s being pants and curb easily. Rubbish they are no different to any other 18" wheel. Split rims do tend to corrode quicker but are probably the nicest E85 OEM Z wheel.

Just make sure you don't drive up curbs or buy tyres with more rim protection. Sorted.

Personally i would stick with the 108's... unless you want to go up a size to 19's.

I have 2 sets of 108's.. a brand new set replaced by the dealer FOC under the 3 year warranty, and a winter set which i refurb'd myself.

They are one of the easiest wheels to clean, and as they are made by BBS are decent quality and are pretty light weight.

The only downside is they do corrode easily.

If you cant replace all 4 tyres i would atleast replace the other rear (which is a RFT) so you have matching tyres on the same axle.

A falken rear 255/35/18 wont be much more then £100.

Hmmm.... decent quality, but corrode easily?!?!?! :o

Surely the quality is shocking for the price they are, and the "name" you get on them???

Split rims don't mean they corrode, pi$h poor wheels do.

Tbh that's the risk you take with a diamond cut lacquered finish. They look the bomb and I will take the refurb hit if (when :P ) required. Looked after they last almost as long as normally finished wheels, people just gripe because it costs more to have them properly split and refurbed to an OEM finish.

As for kerbing, I agree with aquazi - that's nothing to do with the wheels, totally to do with the care you take and the tyres you have on. Anybody who doesn't take care and/or has tyres without rim protection (or the wrong size stretched) is taking a chance with any wheel.

Just suck it up for now and change to non-RFTs when you can afford to - I spent about £1k before the issues that I didn't know about at purchase were sorted. I've seen lots of people say you should budget £1-2k on top of purchase price of a second hand car for fixes unless you know 100% it's perfect. I'll be doing this next time I buy.

Really useful advice, thanks everyone :) I think I'll budget to get a full set of non rft's after christmas, seems like the general consensus is get rid of them!

I dont like 108s....owned them and didnt like em! And they curb easy as the rim is so exposed and because its polished you then loose that when you do a referb....listen to me and get some non standard rims, be different!
If you're paying, I'm in...

Jonny,

you should trade yours in and get this one!

love the carbon diffuser and M seats

The curb easy is bs it's the driver. The finish.. Well a decent refurber will get close to a factory finish. Stop giving people poor advice.

The rim sticks out no more on 108s than any other wheel - IIRC the OEM runflat tyres don't have any rim protection, whereas the PS3s I have on mine do have rim protection. I have some kerb marks on mine from when I had runflats on, but I know for a fact that I have gently bumped the tyres a few times with PS3s and it has not left any more marks on the rims. As Tom says, you can get very close to OEM - in fact you can get them properly diamond cut and polished, if you pay the money. Which will probably still work out cheaper than buying a new set of decent rims.

Absolutely the right decision. But Michelin Pilot Super Sports may be a tad expensive. Get some Vreds!

....worth saying that the rim protection on the tyres (plus lowering and spacing) may be the reason they are trying to eat my arch liner :D
