The pain of selling your car

Just put my Z4Mr up for sale on eBay and already feeling the pain. The add states no offers or time wasters, first reply was an email that just said £16k, this is £1500 below my asking price. I replied, what part of no offers and time wasters did you not understand? They replied, you Tosser, I could buy 3 of your cars with the money i have and with your attitude you will struggle to sell the car! The 2nd reply was from a guy who was having trouble selling his Porsche, it was very long and basically got his life story but no mention of my car, or wanting to view it, very strange? The 3rd reply asked about service history, I replied with a lengthy discription, but never got a reply and the 4th reply offered £3.5k less than my asking price, needless to say I did not respond.

I'm confident the right person will come along, and be extremely happy with the car, it's just all the aggravation you have to go through to find that person, nightmare!

Had the same issue selling my father in laws X3 late last year. It was priced pretty spot on ,less miles that most on eBay and extremely good condition. Was met by stupid offers and abuse about how they could get one for half my price. I just said why didn’t they buy the half price one. Never heard of them again. Mind you we buy any car are nearly as bad, web offer suddenly became £500 less and said private plate (dateless) was not worth anything so best to leave it on. Talk about chancers, the plates worth between 700 and a grand on its own. Needless to say I braved the eBay idiots and a lovely bloke came down didn’t even want to test drive it. And his mates couldn’t believe how good condition it was

Drives me nuts, selling cars privately. As said, "going rate is 3k less" " I'll offer you 5k less than it's worth" etc etc. I can't bring myself to give 5k to dealer so always sell privately and hang out for a genuine buyer, it takes time sometimes. Very frustrating process. :x

The market seems to be very flat at the moment, it took me a month to sell my boxster S only had one viewing but he bought it. Got less for it than the guide price for one in good condition despite it being absolutely mint. Had two offers from stealers at 4k less but would rather put needles in my eyes than go down that route. Hang on in there the right person will come along. Good luck

Looks lovely but if you want a painless sale add the info to the ad.

If you cover the bases then you wont get as many stupid questions. The ad is pretty bare bones... and the images arent great either.

Add service history, garages and dates etc Take pics of paperwork... generally people who buy these cars are clued up and want to know the information. Once its there it will look like good value.

If its as good as it looks do it some justice and it will sell. That advert probably took 30 seconds to make.

£16k bid isnt exactly a insult :?
Jmo but any car advert stating "no offers" may well deter potential buyers ?
Getting someone to the car is often the hardest part , once there if it's really as stand out as projected then hold out for as much as poss without losing the buyer .

Yep have to agree with this.

I think you're better off setting the price a little higher than what you actually want. It's all about perceived value - the buyer wants to feel like they have got better value than the asking price. Also, how many times is the price you see a car for ever the final price?

It's lovely looking motor and I think around £17.5k is about the right price you should get in the end.

GLWTS

Have to agree, I think £16k was actually a very honest bid!

I got bid £7k on a £23,000 car

Think yourself lucky ..

£1500 off a £17,500 car is a good first bid.. negotiation then to find a compromise

Frankly - don't. Get someone else to sell it. SOR or sell it to a M car/Z4M specialist. They'll be interested because yours is relatively low miles, and it's summer. If you agree a deal it'l be painless and gone the next day, cash in bank.

As a side note - looks like a lovely car, wish i wasn't paying for a wedding else i'd consider jumping back in for that! I'd have to have an internal fight over the lack of a roof, mind you 8) :poke:

Why would you not persue an opening offer of 16k on even a very good MR. Whatever you write in the add people will always push for a discount. I for one have never and would never pay sticker price for a car.

Seeing as the first offer was less than 10% off you asking it's not a bad point to start negotiations. Even the £3.5k off offer is only 20% which again isn't too bad to start. It's all part of the game with this sort of thing.

I recently advertised my 3.0si, saying please do not make offers until you've been to see the car.
Firstly I got offered an oil painting and then from another buyer I got a message saying "I'm interested in your car. Whats the lowest you'll take ? "
I responded " I'm interested in your money. How much have you got ?"
- I didn't get a reply !!

Excellent repost. Reminds me of when I put my bike on e-bay and was asked "how low would you go on it?". I replied 2 -3 mph otherwise you will fall off.... :D

You have a great car and it's worth the asking price to the right buyer.

You just have to wait for the right buyer.

There are plenty of people out there who'd love your car but can't afford it, and will offer you less in the hope that you'll go for the easy money.

You're not selling a mainstream car with the Z4M, so normal rules don't apply. Unless your desperate for cash the Z4M seller holds the cards.

I think your price is totally fair.

I don't think you have to fill your advert up with all the detail. A serious buyer with a brain should be able to contact you and ask the relevant questions in a polite manner.

This approach by some people of just emailing you a low offer is disrespectful.

I wouldn't waste my time responding unless you feel like saying, ''sorry pal, you can't afford it. Suggest you go and buy a non-M Z4..

I recently sold a Porsche 911 Carrera S which was a superb car and I was asking top money. I could have sold it 3x over as the right buyers got in contact as they could clearly see it was an excellent car.

Good cars will find the right buyers.

Happy selling!
