The new BMW Z4

Don't know why people get so hung up over a lack of an M version, too much of a niche market these days and you can see the direction BMW is slowly taking which is where the sales are. If they produced an M E89 they'd be sitting around unsold, in many ways you can't blame BMW. I think the E89 in whatever guise is great, has the looks, 2 in one cars, performs and handles more than adequately for everyday use and personally for me econimcal to run whilst still retaining decent performance.

Tim.

If they did an M version at £299 per month, 10K dealer contribution at 4.9% APR I might be tempted :)

The US market is way more important than the UK. How has it sold over there?

From what I can observe during my countless trips into neighbour land, not well at all. I see more SLK's and TT's for sure.

Nah think the majority of M owners on here would upgrade is a proper M version was made! End of!

That's my point. This isn't selling well anywhere in the world. Look at BMW's financial results on their website. They've never ever mentioned E89 sales, despite mentioning how well just about every other model is doing.

This is just the wrong car, pitched to the wrong market. Simple.

I think it's a bloody amazing car.....I prefer it in looks to the E85/6....otherwise I wouldn't have bought one. It's a personal choice at the end of the day, but it perfectly floats my boat

Nothing preventing a limited run of V8 monsters. If they built a prototype or concept and showed it they'd be able to judge likely take up. If they made a production run of 1000 cars, properly sorted, they'd likely have themselves a classic. Sadly unlikely to happen

It indeed caters for a certain group of users, but they are missing out on an additional group of the more "hardcore" I would describe the M owners as.

I don't think there would be many M3 owners that would be happy to have the 335 instead for example.

Like I said its a niche market in which its the wrong time for that market at present. I would be surprised if any 2 seater covertible unless cheap in the first place is selling particularly well in this climate, afterall they're generally bought as a second car for which it would be the first thing that would be knocked off peoples must have list when times are hard. Take the financial deals on the 2.0M Sport, it was purely to shift Z4 sales up a gear as all Z4s were/are selling poorly, I don't think its got anything to do with the car itself etc, it's purely the financial constraints society is going through. I'm guessing BMW selected the 2.0 models for the financial deals as the cheaper model was always going to be the seller. If BMW are now doing good finance deals on the M3 it would never bode well onm them producing an E89M.

at this stage in its life I dont think there will be an M at very least because the cost of it (look at the price of the 35is) means that in the current climate sales would be minimal , I know who have e85 M cars say they would but I think they are working on the basis that cost will be in the same ballpark as an m e85 and they wont , based on the cost of a 35is I dont think you would see much change out of 55k GBP before options , still want one ?

This side of a Boxster, in this segment, it's the best looking car, and regularly outguns the TT and the SLK. Joe Public will go with the SLK and TT, but from an enthusiasts point of view, it's still the preferred choice. Nothing else looks as good or drives as good. I should have changed cars last year, but due to finances not being what they should, I couldn't, and if I wasn't aiming too high for the Boxster, the replacement would have been the LCI Z4. I'm glad the changes aren't huge on the refresh as it will make me feel happier that I am driving something current.

If I get £15,000 for it in a years time, for my 35i, then so be it......but it still won't take away the fact that its a great drivers car and pisses over most cars on the roads in terms of muscular beauty

I would base the cost on a 35is + 5k as that was the same rule that was the case for the E85/E86.

£55k would be nice, but I doubt you would get an E89 M for that, it would only be about £8k more than an E85 M (and about £10k more compared to an E86 M) and we are talking 7 years on.

I would only look at an M variant. I think once you have an M its hard downgrade, regardless if they are good cars. There is just something about the Ms that is special.

I like the E89 but its far too sensible for me, maybe I am the minority. But I dont see many E89 at all, they are all pretty underwhelming models too, there are no 35s around all 2.0, a 2.0 just wouldn't ever cut it for me. The boxter is a just a better car, would run rings in terms of driver satisfaction but not comfort. Where as E85 was a success, but as I hate to say it the coupe wasn't, simply because the niche is too small and the M3 was a better option for most.

During the last E89 sales drive, let BMW know that unless there was a version like an Alpina or ///M version, I'm out.

Tapatalking...

I don't like that roof!!!
Why would you want to make a sleek looking coupe into a rag top lookalike?
Apart from the side indicators I can't tell the difference which is great for current owners plus those considering the latest discount deals
M, shmem  if the 35is was the only car in the range and they had stuck an M badge on it everyone would have been happy. Seems like badge snobbery to me :fuelfire:

I doubt it.. the IS has no LSD, no uprated brakes. The only thing different to it and a 35i is a slight remap on the engine and steering, and tweaked induction from what I've read. No TRUE M dealings on the suspension, drive etc... so an M badge on it would have been laughed at.

Think the suspension has been dropped by 10 mm but otherwise I agree , hence why I think an M version would be so expensive

Bring on the Z2M :)

Yes will be interesting which direction BMW go with the Z2, my take on it is though, BMW would want to keep Z2 costs down to appeal to a wider audience and to capture MX5 sales with a starting price of 16K. Its whether they would bother pitching it at the higher performance end. My only reservation is going back to ragtop after the E89 :| Much prefer all the benefits of a hardtop.
