The mother of all squeaks

The Z has developed what can only be described as the mother of all squeaks, which appears to be eminating from the region between the roll hoops and around the area where the plastic mouldings by the oddments box trim, oddments tray and cover meets. Pressing down in the area where the manual soft top release flap is, supresses it (but not a good seating position while driving...lol)

Almost undrivable as it chirps on every minor flex and bump, so Saturday it's off with the hardtop and start pulling pieces off.

Anyone had anything making a noise in that area before??

Also any clues on removing those pieces of trim would be appreciated until following a pc crash I can re-install my various BMW manauls

Thanks

NO freaking way. I went on a highly spirited drive today (pics coming later) and noticed that same damn noise. Either it went away or I tuned it out though, I didn't notice it on the way home.

This was with the softtop down. So not exactly your situation :P

got it too :( I think its just there when I use the hard top.. thought it was my roadster solutions windblocker at first but it wasnt...

there's a well known issue with the soft top latch that could be your source. Somewhere (maybe even here), there's a DYI where you put some cloth sided tape on part of it and it goes away.

Ive tried to search for the DYI but couldnt find it... It would be great if someone could point it out for me.. I hate that squeek :D

I think i know which chirp you are talking about. I get the same sound too when driving with the top down. It's the metal soft top latch rubbing against the fixation point. A bit of grease should do the trick, as well as some carefully positioned felt tape. There has been a service bulletin on this, but grease and tape is a good temporary fix.

Thanks guys this is exactly what I'm after and demonstrates the real value of this board - cheers

Other priorities kept me out of the garage today, so will now get onto it as soon as I can

OK to update - ran through both processes 1) as per the TSB and 2) the 'felt on the catch' and the squeak is gone. It was on inspection also obvious where the hood catch had worn through the rubberised coating on the catch leaving a delightful metal on metal spot...

I also found while dismantling various bits of the centre console that a previous owner had left a few screws and clips out so now replaced those and the whole thing is more rigid.

Job done - thanks all

Hi,

I'm having the same problem after fitting my hardtop. the images from the other thred Yal posted are dead links. does anyone else have another how to on this as the one from the BMW service bulletin isn't too great?

Its sa'daam annoying when that happens. 8)

Glad you got it sorted, but I noticed a reference to 'manuals' in your initial post CJ - sorry to hijack the post, but you are sorted now :) - is anything of use available in the public domain?

Squeaks - you're on your own as there are myriad of reasons and my initial post was shortly after getting the hardtop and fitting it.

I do have a pdf on setting up the hardtop and documentation from somewhere on stopping wind whistles once fitted.

PM me an email for copies.

not sure if you've seen my post above, but i initally "revived" this thread as i am having the exact same problem as you had way back when... in the same place just after putting the hardtop on.

That's what I assumed.

I did a long way back fix a squeak caused by the locking mechanism on the hardtop. I also found the centre trim piece rubbing on the 2 outer pieces that it sits on and that if badly adjusted the hardtop can knock and squeak on the rear bodywork. that shoudl give you some pointers.

I developed a squeak from just above the staorage box and to the right a bit, what i did was, take out the storage box and crammed some foam up in the space, nice and tight, then put the box back,, worked a treat
