The Jock Question????

A conversation at work today leads me to ask this question.

As a Scot I have no objections to being called "Jock" from Johnny foreigner, but it appears some do and think I should be offended by it as racist remark. :? :?

Not seeing it myself as a racist remark :? I see it as banter.

So if you are a Scot do you consider it racist or take offence...??

as a Non - Jock ....do you consider it racist to use it...??
 
In the most basic sense of the human rights legislation that HRH Blair and his grinning buffoon of wife dragged us down while bankrupting the country, YES it probably it is.
That said it says to me the person using the comment is a slow dimwitted buffon who has niether the intelligence or nous to think of anything better.
It is not a phrase i would use unless trying to wind you up, I much prefer the persperation led accronym.

PS, will you at the airport to welcome home your team from the RWC on Monday :poke:
 
I only get called a 'Jock' by a few English people I know, they kind of do it to wind me up.. but Im not offended by it. However, I may if it was someone I didn't know. I dont think it is racisit though, we get too hung up on all the politcal correctness nonsense...and those that bang on about it the most are the most narrow minded as they cant see outside the box - or have a sense of humour.
 
So perhaps it is all down to the tone it is said in, Having been in the forces I have been called jock thousands of times but rarely in a diminutive or dismissive tone.
 
Ive got a Scot friend whos name is Jim Strapp....he doesnt take kindly to being called Jock for some reason.......

I can understand that, went through that also (few ago now) in the army cadets it was quite common to hear it and as you say not in a offensive tone, totaly differant to how I've heard it more recently

Bit like me being called "Taff" by those English people over the bridge....

How anyone can class that, or "Jock" as racist I think is crazy.

I never get offended by it. I am proud to be a "Taff", although why people want to name me after a river I've never worked out.........

Aye "Jock" and "Taff" are commonplace in the forces for sure but I must admit that even though I have worked with Scots in civvie street it has never been something that I have been tempted to call them oddly.

Mind you I do find a little more rivallry/animosity in general in Civvie street between the UK nations. Sure there was mocking in the RAF but only because it was an easy way to get some banter going. It often irritates me how much we tend to differentiate at all and rather than split up politically (as many seem to want), I would much rather us stay as a unit. It maybe that I am a Northerner anyway but I always seemed to get on so well with Scots, maybe as we enjoyed the booze as much as one another.

Hmm maybe mentioning anything political was wrong but I hope you get what I mean. I guess I'm just a Jock lover :rofl:
 
Well the French call us English 'Les Rosbifs' (from when they used to burn our Beef during the Foot & Mouth epedemic)... & have been very good at keeping this reasonably quiet.

I find it very amusing that they think it's such an insult... & often introduce myself as as Le Rosbif to the French I meet & wait for their reaction, excellent icebreaker especially to zee ladiez.

Simple rule with any banter test the water first, don't assume, especially with all this pathetic political correctness

Dont mind being called a Jock. Do mind being called a fat twat, which seems to be more common... Dont think there is a derogatory term for the Scotish at all, cos we're so god damn amazin!! :wink:
 
Aye Jimmy..... Jock Who?

Most of the Scots I have met call everyone Jimmy (except my Mum, we called her Mum)

I don't think I've ever called or heard anyone called Jock (over here) and Canada was settled by a hell of a lot of Scotsmen a long time ago so the Scots are a big part of the population base.

Glad to hear I am not they only one who considers it Banter to be called Jock, taff etc. the Countries that make up the British Isles have a long, bloody and interesting history, the way we talk to each other in the modern age is all derived from that history, each one of our countries have had moments of greatness in their own right and moments that are probably best forgotten, but we were / are never stronger than when we stand together, and our banter and British sense of humour i think is something we should be very proud of.
