The Image Thread 2014

Thanks PVR.

Ye the 7DMKII will be an interesting camera! Looking forward to seeing what they bring to the table!

I don't actually do any filming, never really got into it! Those glidecams are nice tho!

Thanks Tom, I bought Lightroom a few months back but the only thing I find a bit of a nuisance is that I can only use it on a single machine so the library can not really be approached / used from another machine without doing some background fiddling.

I use mine across 3 machines, MacBook Air, Mac Pro and a 27" iMac. My original licence gives me two machines I can install it on and the 27" is my work machine so I have a licence through work.

I carry my library on an external SSD and it works great, only thing that annoys me is my custom brushes don't sync across machines. So if I make a brush on one machine I have to select the brush edit which comes up as a custom brush and re-save a new brush on each machine.

Find that annoying because I have loads of custom brushes for number plates head lights etc etc different for different tasks

I keep my main library on my Mac Pro and I create a second library on my external drive as the more images you have and edit the slower the program works. My original library has hundreds of thousands of images so I don't use it as a working library more a back up which is then backed up using time machine for safe keeping.

I make a new library every year for my personal stuff and make separate libraries for weddings or big jobs that I know will have thousands of images so it's easier that way. Then when I'm finished I sync them together by importing the different libraries into my primary library on my Mac Pro.

It's designed to work like that so if you work with a team anyone can access the images/edits and make edits on the fly.

Also if you don't want to carry all the data all the time Lightroom can make smart previews so you can edit on the road without the original file then the data is synced when you get back. So you can use Lightroom on iPad or iPhone etc and wirelessly sync XMP data.

Think it's def the best solution out there. Just wish there were a few improvements
The sharpening and noise reduction aren't great and it would be nice if they could design a clone stamp tool as the healing brush doesn't always work that well. So you end up opening an image in Photoshop to do that and my files end up being 2-300mb when you have 1000 images just stupid amount of space required.

Tom, thanks for sharing an insight into how you organise your library! I've not been entirely happy with my current import everything into one approach!

Love the pic of the batmobile!

Cheers Paul

Will have them up next week hopefully!

Thanks Neil and no problem if you need any info feel free to PM me

Hmm..... Apaches, think I know where that is :) If I'm right, my old man flew lightnings on 111 Sqn out of there in the 1970s :)
Great pics btw - did you get both Lancs (Vera and Thumper) as well as the Vulcan ?

Did you use ND filters for the panning shots?

Never used filters its something I would like to master one day for shots away from motorsport and then try them at some motorsport events like MX
