Got the z late last summer

It's a weekend car
Had couple of niggles
Electric mirror switch had a fault where one of the directional buttons was at fault
Had to go to the stealers for complete new switch
And the drivers exterior door handle was at the top of its limit
For this I took the car to http://www.bmwman.co.uk/index.html
Based a few miles from J26 of the M1
I believe it had a new carrier fitted
Works like a dream since
Was very happy with the work and would recommend
Also had some coding done whilst there seemed rude not to
And had all 4 callipers cleaned an painted

Then fancied have a go at a android tablet install after reading the efforts of danmiddle2
Used this guide for stripping down the cid

Many thanks to srhutch for selling on his spare cid which is mint, so I could chop up my existing unit which had a small scratch on the screen, wouldn't have started this without a replacement in case it all went wrong.

The phablet I used is a Sony xperia ultra
This has no physical button on the front like the Samsung home button
And the visible screen size is almost identical to the original screen
So no black boarders or lost picture

The Sony is tethered to my phone for data to use iPlayer radio and Spotify and google maps for nav
A 64gb memory card has most of my music collection and the Sony walkman app is OK nice graphics

Also using the torque app
Only bought a cheap odb2 BT unit just to see what it was like , rev counter is slightly laggy, but not the end of the world for the amount of time I use the car.

For the future would like to refresh the suspension and new wheels and get rid of run flats

Also find this forum compulsive reading on a almost daily basis

I'd do another tablet install
But might be tempted to loose Center air vents an use 2 fascia adaptors with one inverted, an then see what size screen I could use.
A lot of people used nexus 7 tablets with a custom ROM that was designed to work well in car,
Or if Parrott ever release the rnb6 double din unit drop that in.
Then the integration between apps should be more seamless

Where in the land are you based
I'd do another , but you may want to have a look to make sure its something you do want as with all adaptations it has a couple of idiosyncrasies,
But would be more than happy to help anyone out
 
I live in Worcester I already have nav bluetooth fitted in the car and would really just be looking to get rid of the old fashioned nav screen, and replace it with something a bit more modern

I had to allow for a small access hole to get to the power button as in case device ever went flat,
As It's not a daily driver
On the nexus 7 an 10 you can write a line of code that when the device sees power it starts up from a totally off state.
I tried this on a old xperia phone an bricked it so I bottled it for the new one.

On the xperia ultra they're 2 charging ports
One is the micro USB that most phones have, the other is a magnetic connection that used on the docking stations
I decided to use the magnetic connection as the connector is slimmer
I know you can get right angled micro USB leads but the ones I looked at were to big.
The magnetic connection does a weird thing , when you add 12v from a CIG lighter adaptor the device doesn't see it , if you then unplug and plug back in to adaptor it does see it and starts charging.
So in mine (haven't done this yet) I'll have a button in the ash tray to switch on/off
One idea around this is to pick up a ignition supply to power the charger but one that drops out as the car is cranked this would simulate the device seeing power loosing it and then seeing it.

An my Bluetooth doesn't seem to be the greatest
Connects fine
Plays music no problems but the mfsw vol works OK , tracks up down don't. Until switch head unit off an back on then vol and track both work

Probably not selling this very well as a concept
