The F-117 Nighthawk is Officially Retired

"Nearly 30 years ago Lockheed Martin's elite Skunk Works team developed what would become the F-117A Nighthawk Stealth Fighter. A few of their earlier projects include the SR-71 Blackbird and U2 Dragon Lady spy planes.
Today is the last for the Stealth Fighter which is being replaced by the F-22 Raptor (another Skunk Works project)."

And it's replacement....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-22_Raptor

I thought this was quite telling in the Wiki write up:

During Exercise Northern Edge in Alaska in June 2006, 12 F-22's of the 94th FS downed 108 adversaries with no losses in simulated combat exercises. In two weeks of exercises, the Raptor-led Blue Force amassed 241 kills against two losses in air-to-air combat, and neither Blue Force loss was an F-22.

This was followed with the Raptor's first participation in a Red Flag exercise. 14 F-22's of the 94th FS supported attacking Blue Force strike packages as well as engaging in close air support sorties themselves in Red Flag 07-1 between 3 February and 16 February 2007. Against designed superior numbers of Red Force Aggressor F-15s and F-16s, it established air dominance using eight aircraft during day missions and six at night, reportedly defeating the Aggressors quickly and efficiently, even though the exercise rules of engagement allowed for four to five Red Force regenerations of losses but none to Blue Force. Further, no sorties were missed because of maintenance or other failures, and only one Raptor was adjudged lost against the virtual annihilation of the defending force. When their ordnance was expended, the F-22s remained in the exercise area providing electronic surveillance to the Blue Forces.

Has it really been that long? :o
..now I really feel old

Wow nice link. How can it be so old, and they retire it, and yet it still looks like it's from the future. What a beast, the Z4 of the aviation world :)

That F-22 is wicked! Thanks for the info Shipkiller. Hell, last time I did a Red Flag we were flying F-4's. Talk about feeling old.

What really impressed me is how well it did during RedFlag. RF is brutal on the Blue forces the first couple of days...until they learn.......

Yeah, I had heard about the F-22's whupping some but via the base paper. Let me tell you....that engine....super awesome. I've tinkered with it a little bit and talk/hang out with some people who work on it day in an out and it's great to work on.

The F-117 retiring? I've missed that one. Though they've been talking about retiring the B-52 for ages 8) We still have slots for the F-117 so it ain't that close to going bone-yard

Current wargame scenario for an air attack of Taiwan by Chinese Air Force calls for roughly 2000 fighters of third and fourth generation. By themselves, no match for
an F-22. The scenario calls for a massive attack on Taiwan. The combined Taiwanese Air Force and air forces from the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force (including
F-22s) would number in the 200~300. Roughly 1000 chinese fighters would be pulverized and the entire Taiwanese and U.S. air forces would be rendered useless
either by destruction or by running out of ammo. Then the Chinese Air Force proceeds to take control of the air, land Ground Forces on the island and take control
of it.

The capability of the F-22 is quite simply remarkable but there are physical limits that sheer numbers can overtake.

Latest intelligence on the Chinese Air Force shows an ever increasing size for its Air Force even if its quality does not match Western Air Forces.

Cheers.

and I thought terrorism was the issue.... :?
There are scenarios on the book for any possible major global upheaval. I have seen a few of the scenarios while I was with Anti-Submarine squadrons. Hey, I was the guy that fixed the systems and calibrated them, nice to know what I am up against :)

^^^ It's just scary to a civilian like me that people actually think up these scenarios.... I just wish that people were nicer to each other and countries would not have to think up defenses to all possibilities.... Maybe I am just a dreamer. :)

That's a clean one. The one I saw had rust all over the intake grills. I know it's in a totally different class. But I've always liked the A-10.
