I'd like to know the rules of Political Correctness and I can't find them anywhere. I sometimes say things to which someone might say: "You can't say that!". What do they know that I don't? So, please enlighten me as to what I cannot say giving the reasons why my freedom of speech should be curtailed, with examples.

Seems like we can't say anything these days without offending people and perish we should disagree with people for fear of being called rude or politically incorrect. The world is going mad.

With regard to Exdos' original question, I am not a subscriber to political correctness, unless forced kicking and screaming to behave 'correctly'. I think it is more about manners, politeness, and being respectful - simply treat people the way you would wish them to treat you. HOW you say something is much, much more important than what you say on most ocassions - and I refer you to my 12 year old son as living proof of how hard it is to learn to communicate in a clear, balanced and considered manner... Thinking before speaking / posting is an important personal attribute, IMO. I have lost count of the number of times I have written a reply to a post and then simply chosen not to say anything. Of course a couple of errors of judgement always slip through...

I was sitting on a bus behind a mother and her young son.
Her boy kept looking around and making weird funny faces at me.
After a few minutes I tired of his antics so I said, "When I was a young boy my mother told me that if I made an ugly face it just might stay that way."
The little sh1t replied, "Well, you can't say you weren't warned."

Exdos, I think you're right, I'm not sure there are rules. Political correctness seems to be a catch all phrase for everything that's going wrong with life. We have a wonderful right to free speech and to express our opinions whether they are liked or not. It should be accepted that if I say something abusive, dumb or ill thought out to someone, that person has a right to reply and make me look stupid in a public forum (he already does this for himself, no need to comment - ed) and that's all good. For a light hearted version read Bing and Carol's exchange above. I've stuck my foot in my mouth on here a couple of times and been called on it. All right and proper.
For me, "political correctness gone mad" seems to be when you are no longer allowed to express your own opinion in public because you might possibly offend somebody, somewhere. It seems to be the thin end of the wedge, clamping down on freedom of speech.

I think younger people may have mistakenly extended the public limitations placed upon their teachers by codes of conduct into private discourse. "You can't say that!", actually, probably I can, but not if I am in a customer facing or professional role. Why you would want to is another question.

Prince Philip, just like my mum has old age immunity... ie can say whatever they like... she even told a girlfriend once she didn't love me as we were all driving together in the car... the look of satisfaction on her face as we all sat in stone silence afterwards was immense

You should see the political correctness in America. Where if one has conservative political leanings and says anything negative about President Obama's POLICIES. You are immediately called a racist. Thereby stopping all political policy debates.
