The do Ron Ron question

I don't know if this has been asked before but does anyone run their zed on 98 Ron fuel rather than 95 Ron? If so have you used both and made a comparison?
Everytime I'm at the pump i wonder how many people use the higher ron fuel and what state the fuel is actually in if i were to use it as i can't imagine many people pay the extra, how often is it replaced?
I'm kind of intrigued to spend a few months using it and see what performance difference i get, after all the handbook and official figures, 0-60 etc for the e89 are based on 98 ron fuel.
On the other hand, seeing as i'm spending about £10,000 a month on ordinary unleaded i'm not sure the bank manager will wear the extra expense :) Ok so perhaps not quite 10k a month but it feels like it.

The calorific content of the fuel is the same, but it burns smoother / more predictably. Basically it'll let the engine advance the ignition a little more giving you more hp. With your engine I suspect you'll notice a different with 98+ (V-Power, Tesco Momentum).

You'd be surprised how many people actually use premium unleaded :)

I have worked out that over 10,000 miles per year, 2mpg improvement (at a guess) and 5ppl more, it costs me £60 extra a year to run my car on super unleaded.

I certainly can't feel any difference in performance, but to me its a no-brainer to spend an extra £5 a month to run my pride and joy on the good stuff

I recently switched to Tesco 99 and the 'power' delivery (of my 2.0) is noticeably smoother. Not seen any performance gains but then again what can I expect from four cylinders :fuelfire:

Nooooooo! Not worth the Clubcard points IMHO.

Total Excellium is also a good one.....and I certainly notice a difference between 95 and 98. :)

Its about 3. :driving:

Have run mine exclusively on V Power since I got it - so can't claim to have noticed any difference in a lower grade fuel - as I've never used any in it.

i live on pot noddles and pizza's, i survive, my car ain't getting any better than me

Is there a thread on here without a little :poke: at each other
From the sounds of it taz couldn't do with a roadster anyway, all the empty packaging would keep blowing out

Seriuosly i am going to try the 98 just to see for myself.

PS I know people have run cars on chip fat but surely pot noodles clog the fuel filter ! :)

Not as much as it clogs his arse I bet LOL ...dried string in a pot UGH!

But my Nissan runs on 80% SVO (straight vegetable oil) in all but the very coldest weather. But then my last purchase was a 1000 litre IBC of sunflower oil for £500....nice and cheap but it does smell like a donut van when you're out LOL

Lots of threads on this with people doing para scientific tests. Generally seesm the increased MPG outweights the increased costs, without even taking the smoothness and performance increase into account

Tesco's finest for the Zed since the day we met

Not hard to do the maths on that saving, if you did sell donuts as well you'd probably end up with fuel for free :)

we don't have Tesco in OZ, so I use Shell V-power or similar 98RON. The standard fuel here is 91RON but I have never put it in the Z.

My previous car (Tuned turbo Nissan skyline) was forced to use 91RON occasionally as some petrol stations don't stock 95 or 98 here, and it was terrible car would kind of cough and splatter when you put your foot down and the power delivery was shaky and not smooth at all. However put 98RON in it and it was smooth and responsive and the engine sounded way better.

Obviously being a tuned car the difference is more noticeable, then a factory tuned car. But it made me realize I only want to use 98+ in my cars. :driving:

Also clever peeps on here can explain pinking, pinging or anti-knocking which i believe is another fact explaing the smoothness especially with Jap cars that must run on 98 or higher

Certain turbocharged cars require the use of 98 RON such as Subarus and Evos, as ours are designed to run on lower grade fuel it's not a requirement. It may retard/advance the ignition if you run a tankful of one grade and then switch to another but I doubt anyone will honestly be able to tell the difference. It's placebo effect again, bikers are always talking about how their bike runs much better and faster with premium in when in fact it's impossible due to fixed timing designed for 95 RON (89 minimum) so there would be no difference whatsoever. I've tried a few tanks of each in my Z4 and cannot see any difference, tried excellium, V-power etc I just stick 95 in now, it's more than adequate, it's 3.0 6cyl BMW engine, not a Bugatti Veyron.
