The codes of doom.

Fair play to you guys who have endured these niggles, I’m two months into ownership and I’m ready to get a lump hammer out and claim on the insurance due to insanity!!

First of all I had the bong of death with the roof, then I didnt, it just disappeared, sorted itself. I did worry as I only have a three month warranty, but it didn’t show up and no fault codes appeared when I took it to a local spannerman.

Then today I thought I would treat it to a bit of megiuars and love put the roof down, went slowly over a speed bump and the bongs came back! Roof module, the windows would not work and the roof wouldn’t come up despite making all the right noises.

Then the light disappears and it works again for a second and so on.

Luckily as I got on the drive it vanished long enough for me to get the roof up and locked, but starting it up again and the bong comes on?

Anyone else had similar, what do I explain to the garage I brought it from?

Thanks in advance. Aaaaaarrrrgggghhhhhh

Low battery voltage can bring up fictitious problems, how old is your battery & is your car seldom used? :?

Hi Rob,

Thanks, I don’t know is the honest answer, it’s second hand from a dealer so I doubt they would have put a new one on.

Does everything need reprogramming with a new battery or can I just swap one. My apologies from a man who can’t wire a plug :)

As I have just gotten over a roof problem, I can give advice just from the research I did and my experience.

But take into account that I am no expert in any way.

I started by getting out a voltometer. Tested battery, replaced those salmon relays just for prophylactic measure. Started testing all switches. They are easy to test if you can get to them. The shop can pull the plug off the control module and hand test every switch to see if it is operational by manipulating the switch while the voltometer is plugged in at the pins (the needle probes worked well for this). Just make sure to disconnect battery before doing anything there.

Then I tested the wiring harnesses for continuity. But here is where the real challenge came for me. The wiring harness tested all good. Because of the symptoms and the research, and swapping some of the hall sensors and clearing codes and rereading codes, I made an educated assumption that the wiring harness was defective as my next step in troubleshooting. The fact that it tested fine for continuity really threw me for a loop from the beginning. I believe that is why it was an intermittent problem for awhile and what made the problem so hard to trace.

You are having different errors than I had. Mine was A68c. However I would probably troubleshoot much the same way. When I get around to removing the original wires from the harness, I will strip the insulation to get the satisfaction of seeing the wire breaks!

Thanks so much 🙏

I’ll relay all that to a professional:)

I hope it fixes it, I love the look of the car, great cruiser with the roof down but it’s always a worry to have a gremlin car :(

Hi, no reprogramming necessary but you will need to register the battery if it’s like for like & if it’s a different sized battery it’s going to need coding
Date of manufacture is usually stamped on one of the poles.

Am I going mad? Does this look like 2009 battery?

It doesn’t help that the warranty sticker hasn’t been marked up, if you don’t use the car for a few days what voltage does it have?
Rob

If BMW have given you the fault codes, did they not advise what would be needed to fix, and how much it would cost?

If it’s still under warranty, get it booked in with bmw!

For what it’s worth IMHO it’s not an OEM battery and it’s definitely not an AGM battery..so plenty to chew on

I am taking it back to the dealer. Problem is, he is not a BMW garage so I wanted to go back (its also 200 miles away) forearmed with the problems. Its not a large forecourt so I wanted to make sure the lights were not just reset if you get me.

Thanks for all the great info.
