The Brits, their convertibles and their weather!

I make an annual pilgrimage to Spain to see out the worst of the winter - and every time I come the one thing that strikes me is how almost no one drives a convertible. But this climate is made for them! I understand that the UK is either the biggest or second biggest convertible market in Europe. And yet we have such a dire climate. Why do we do it? :?

If I lived here all the time, I'd buy a convertible. No question. From June to August, perhaps the sun's too fierce for the old rag top (or E89 for that matter), but the rest of the year is absolutely ideal. Even this time of year, we've had several weeks of 15-20 degrees and sun most days. It can't be a matter of money as there's some quality rolling stock here - but mostly of the saloon/off-road variety.

It's a riddle I can't fathom... Can you?

P.S. I didn't bring the Z4 as my folks who live out here wanted a whole load of stuff from Blighty and capacious as the Z4 is, its boot just wasn't quite up to it. So it's sitting idle in the UK, probably under a mountain of snow. Rats.

i'd imagine as you said, the heat has a huge part to play and as most people don't have the luxury of affording to buy and run 2 cars, they just buy 1 car that does everything all year round.

air con + tin top in spain = 8)

It's the dust...

Left the windows open once down in Spain on my old Shogun next to the beach, was as if I had Taz's neighbour cutting stone... car was filled with dust everywhere.

Might just be their social scene don't want to get dirty...

I think it's because we need to make the most of the sun when it's out! Not so necessary in Spain!
I think you've hit the nail on the head there. I usually drop the roof even when the weather's crap. What's that song about mad dogs and Englishmen...?
