The beginning of the end?

Agreed. M should be a standard performance car, separate from any other model. Shame really, an M diesel? Give me a break!! Yes, diesel BMW's are very, very good....but they are not to be given an M badge IMO.

im not very fond of this idea. like mentioned in the thread link, we are gonna see m badges all over bmw soon. people will buy a 323i and stick and m badge in front....m3 voila!

Poor show. BMW trying to appeal to the mass market.

Agreed, BMW engines are strong, but an ///M diesel? :(

I'm thinking this may mean the true M models may become more hardcore and built in limited numbers.

I think that if BMW was to make an epically powerful oil burner. I would think it could be deserving of an m badge. And a diesel can be epic. Just look at the Audi R10 LMP1. Peugeot 908 hdi fap. We may be surprised as the diesel racing tech filters down over time to the consumer. Might be rather novel to trounce someone and then rub salt in their wound when they find the trouncing was done by a sport diesel.

I would hope that BMW not go the way of the American auto makers and start calling cars "sport editions" due to a ticked options box that says sport decal pack.

So who exactly bought there Z because it has an M on the back?

Am I the only one who bought one for the looks, the epic bang per buck performance. The shear adrenalin rush, caused from the pure concentration required to hustle it down a twisting Cornish B road. :driving: The wind rushing past, as the shadows of overhead branches fillter the early morning light into a myriad of dancing golden stars 8) and OOOOHHHH!!!! the sound of that straight six engine approaching the red zone. The Z4M is so much more than a badge and if they never make another like it, then I'll just keep this one.

The M it’s just a badge, Iconic or not it was always a marketing symbol , from the very first one, so enjoy the rest of the package. That’s what really matters.

Move along, nothing to see here! This isn't anything new. So no-one has ever heard of the old M535i which was the model in the late 80's beneath the proper M5...

One could argue the X5M and X6M were already part of this as well. I'd hardly put them in proper M-car territory.

Probably everyone who owns an M3/M5 or a Z4M

Oh dear, where to start here, the M division, if I'm not mistaken, was to make the ultimate performance version of a current model and so each M version was developed.....not just let's stick a spoiler on the back and add an M badge.

BMW has already diluted the M brand by adding the M monica to standard cars....the M sport for instance.

It's emissions, you can't build big engined high performance petrol toys that conform to the ever shrinking regs.

There's a belief diesels & those fitted with particulate filters are seen to be less polluting, especially after AUDI's been winning Le Mans. The head engineer supposidly took his white handkerchief immediately at the end of the race, wiped it round the rear exhast infront of the press & showed it had no dirt whatsoever...

The day they make a diesel that runs as silky smooth & sounds as good as my 3.0 straight six, only then will I loose my petrol head

I don't really car tbh, fact is my M Coupe had the M badges deleted on the outside. I know people already who have E92 316 with M packet on it. I rather leave others behind me than to pose with an M badge.

I think there is a place for an M diesel, M performance and 50mpg who could argue? I no diesel engines do not have the anywhere near the same characteristics but I'm sure anyone would be happy to save some money on fuel at the prices atm.

Il remind you that Audi has been winning Le man with diesels for years.

I would be happy to have an M5 for fun, and an M5 diesel for commuting fun... Diesel torque can be pretty immense

Yes agree about the diesels great (lovely sound... not, lol), but not a true M. I would go as far to say turbos are not good either, but only for emissions

Also I would have saved my pennies and got a Z4 e89 M if they put the M3 e92 v8 engine in it.... Now that would be a great project car... build a Z4M e89 4.0l v8.. the car that BMW should of built

+1 that's the reason why I bought mine and I have zero M badges on the outside of my car... People who know cars will know it.
