I've never owned a car from new, and am by no means an expert here, however my Tribology lecturer at Uni was a consultant to the motor industry (used to work for Ricardos) and he said modern engines don't need anything like the running in that cars from 10-20 years ago did, and that if you don't bed the bearings and valves in properly in the first few thousand miles, an engine won't attain its full power. That's not to say you need bounce engine off the limiter the 1st time you start it up, just that once everythings up to temperature, it might be worth stretching its legs a little. Hopefully others with more specific knowledge will be along shortly.
