That'll be a water leak then...

Hi all,

Well what a lovely rainy night last night was! A welcome break from the week or two of heat us Brits crave but complain about when it arrives.

Anyways, the missus decided she wanted to take the car for a run this morning only to discover the outer edges of both footwells were wet.

The sources of the leaks look like they might be different on each door. I attach a couple of pics for reference.

The passenger door you can clearly see the water is coming in between where the two bits of plastic meet. Does your learned experience suggest this is door seals?

On the drivers side though it looks to me as though it might be coming in from slightly higher up. Any ideas?

Looks like I'll be needing a cover for her sooner than I expected! (The car I mean...not the wife)

Doorcards off. Replace/reseal membranes as @markplant suggests. Don't remove the airbags or you will need to re-set the fail codes.
Caveat: leaks can also originate form multiple other sources. I've been chasing my water ingress for years after replacing membranes, window/door seals, scuttle panel etc.
It's a leaky car but a stormforce cover / garage can help when it rains.

Thanks Chris. To be fair, the car currently has an airbag light on the dash already. I need to get it plugged in and see what it comes up as and try to clear it/fix the issue.

I’d say the two are linked if you have water coming in

^^ This.

I did my door membranes when I got the car when I added an extra door speaker as they were all torn up. I disconnected the battery - before touching the airbags and everything was fine. It took a while to cut/scrape off all the old butyl tape and messy AF, I used Tardis to melt the sticky stuff but it was 30c at the time. Use gloves!!1

If you do disconnect the airbags be very carful with the yellow plugs they have a retaining latch that is easy to break.

Finally if you are putting in new tape like I did put it in the freezer the night before makes it so much easier to apply, you may be able to get away with cutting the butyl strip rather than removing it as its still quite sticky if you can cut it back to fresh material without any dust or crud stuck to it.

There is a guide on here to apply silent coat and install the extra door speaker i followed that and replaced the membrane at the same time.

Okay - so, I took both door cards off and and on the drivers side there was no soundproofing/membrane at all. Further to that, the screw that holds the glass in place was at the bottom of the door! That'll explain the issues with the window not going down properly then. I re-installed it and now have a smooth window action.

The missus then proceeded to run water down the outside of the glass with the window fully up. Water began to cascade into the inside of the door. I presume this means my outer door seals have failed. Is this an easy fix? If so, any ideas how?

Tried the same thing on the passenger door and some water is managing to squeeze through gaps in the membrane to do the same thing. Both sides are causing a leak into the footwells.
