That small glove box on the drivers side?

Unfortunately just as I opened mine today to remove stuff as I was dropping my car into BMW for it's service and MOT the clip broke (feels like the spring inside may have failed or fallen out) on the small cubby/glove box/whatever it's called on the drivers side to the right and down from the steering wheel.

BMW are going to price up a replacement but in the meantime I wanted to get some idea on a DIY repair but for the life of me I can't find anything online for this particular part. It seems to be possibly EU specific and sometimes called a Euro glove box but I have been totally unable to find any parts that relate to it.

Just wondering if anyone here has had the same problem and been able to find a replacement or could point me in the right direction by knowing what the part is actually called?

Thanks for that, BMW want around £100 for the part alone so I think the fix may well involve some velcro!

Thanks again for your help.

Does anyone have any idea how this part would be removed? I'm relatively sure I can fix/bodge/break completely but would be much easier if I can get it out of the dash..

The whole panel has to be removed as it's attached from the rear, I had the same problem.

I don't seem to have that cubby, but one of the old wrecks I've driven in the past had something similar, I think I gently squeezed the two sides and it dropped down and I was able to lift it out as it had two pegs acting as the hinge, don't know if it'd work in this instance

Thats worth a try, it must have at least one 'lug' stopping it dropping down too far :)

It has two pieces on the left and right hand side (lugs) that slot into the housing however there is something at the back it's pivoting on, I've tried "pulling it as hard as I think I can without breaking it" but with no success.. Thanks for all replies so far!

McButler - I think it's part of some kind of storage pack, given how flimsy the part that broke is I can only guess this wasn't fitted to many cars due to the lack of online information or posts about it breaking..

Does that begin with the 3 screws in the panel beneath the storage bin? Is it a relatively easy job?
Sorry for the late reply, I bought a new one from the dealer thinking it would be a straight forward swop, only to find that the whole panel needs to be removed. I've tried to find info on how to remove the panel without damaging anything, still not found any info :headbang: sitting with the new part in the garage and a self tapping screw holding the tray closed

Is it possible to fit some velcro pads so you can open and close it, the return the panel for other bits n bobs?

It would be possible, just in my case having bought a new part would like to fit it.

Yeah same, I was hoping to be able to fit a couple of magnets to hold it closed whilst still being usable, it would be so much easier if I could get the damn thing out though.. I think the the glue on velcro would probably melt in a hot car and pull off when the door was pulled down.

I really can't believe there is so little information on something so flimsy and breakable!

Was thinking of asking the dealer what they would charge to fit it, at least that way if they break anything it's for their account.

I’ve seen removal guides on here for that panel, the panel beneath the radio comes out and the panel on the end of the dash & a couple of other things, this uncovers the fasteners for the panel you need to remove.
