Thanks for the erm help

Hi I'm new here and after reading a lot of z4 vs m threads I've got a few additional questions.
I'm looking for a weekend toy that does no more than 5k a year and will likely see a track at some point,
I prefer the styling of the coupe but the m engine for the same price is very tempting.
From what I gather the coupe has a better gear box but run flats, cheaper tax and ins and the same suspension?
What are the main pros and cons, roadster vs coupe, 3.0si vs 3.2m?
Also I've read that servicing the m is more but does anyone have prices to compare?
I've seen a few cars that have had there run in at 1250-1350miles, does it have to be before the 1200 mark?
Any useful info, tips etc would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi and welcome.

Others will give you a more technical answer on the difference. But for me, you need to decide what is more important to you - the superior looks of a coupe or the fun of top down motoring.

As for the 3.0 or 3.2, costs won't really be a determining factor given the miles you'll do. Petrol is the biggest difference. The ///M definitely has the X-factor but the 3.0 is plenty enough to keep you entertained. Only you will know what it means to you driving style, future use and above all, ego.

As for the 1200 mile service, the important thing for me is it's had one. I dont think it needs to be precise - just in the same ballpark. Walk away if it's not had one.

You can't go wrong whichever option you choose. Just remember to let us know and of course, don't forget the pics (and the stubby)!

What you'll get from asking this question on here is one camp who bought 3.0si's justifying their decision, going up against the other camp who bought M's justifying theirs. In my opinion you need to get a drive in both and decide which suits you best. The whole coupe v roadster is a whole different debate which just churns on and on. You either want/need a rag top or you don't, you decide.

In relation to running costs the M version will cost you substantially more, Inspections I and II are expensive, you'll use more fuel and brake components are costly. As with any BMW of this kind the 'M Tax' applies to all maintenance work.

Also the suspension is different between the cars and the non M car has electronic steering.

Please God don't let this turn into another thread like the recent one covering similar ground. :headbang:

I am not going to enter into the 3.0si vs ///M debate this time. What I will say is that I drive my car every day, and will likely never track it, but if I was in your position using it as a weekend car and possibly tracking it then I'd get the ///M every day of the week. Let's be honest, that's what it was designed for. A lot of people use their ///M every day, but I do a LOT of miles and will put about 18,000 on it in a year... That is a lot of petrol, a lot of wear on individual components, a service at least once a year, possibly new rear tyres every year, brake components etc. etc. - so it doesn't make sense for me, at all.

As above, you need to drive each and decide yourself - the prices of ///Ms and 3.0si are not far apart now, and you ca get good deals on what you would expect to be the more expensive car - though coupes tend to me more expensive. Apparently they are 'exclusive' :D

Thinking about it, if you are going to track it, will you need a roof at some tracks ? If so, you need to factor in the cost of a hard top for the roadster if it doesn't come with one.

Good luck with the search :driving:

Don't worry about the run-flats - you can change them! You will probably need to after a couple of good track sessions!

What's more important - the tin-top or the wind in your hair. It sounds to me like the best option for you would be the M coupe. :)

Please post a link to the thread mentioned

Z4mcoupe would be ideal but it's over my budget

WOW five pages of handbags!
One last question before someone kicks off, How important is it to have warranty with a z4mr?

It would seem everyone is either religiously avoiding a repeat of that thread on this one, or out hooning

Answer - based on what ///M owners have said - is mostly 'very'
