Thanks for the add

Hello all, thanks for the add, I've been a member of the Facebook BMW Z4 Uk Owners group for many months now and I know many are on here too.

I was originally hoping to build an AC Cobra with my son to bond and get some two-seater fun to replace the fun my GSF 1200 Bandit used to provide.

The Cobra is not a financial option as we are also in need of a new kitchen etc!!! Being alive is so expensive...

I had started liking the E89 as the hardtop flexibility appealed, however, I'm now drawn to the more pure roadster E85 3.0 Si circa £6k ish.

I'm still attempting to warm the wife up sufficiently to get the green light, one very valid question she raised was the reliability and maintenance costs, I'm no tinkerer so would employ the experts in Middlesbrough to keep her running if needed.

Any argument I can put to her to sway her opinion is very welcome, she used to enjoy driving my Golf GTI when I had that (before kids), she is not factoring in any roof down or foot down fun into her position either when I borrow it to her for a girly day out!

Tks

If you were hoping to build the Cobra, why not tinker? You could tackle several items as part of preventative maintenance. Then you're just down to the regular service intervals? Plus that way you can get stamps in your service history too?

I'd make sure you have a cheap set of wheels for when you let her borrow it! different cars mean perceptions of curbs are different!

Don't let the older 3.0i put you off, also a great engine under the hood of them. Plus you get a proper dip-stick! Hah!

Good luck with your search :)

Good point kis on the cobra, That may have been optimistic (pipe dream) but I would have got a rolling chassis with an engine. My possibley misguided perception was the bits would all be new and the instructions detailed!

I’m by no means mechanicaly-minded beyond the basics! I would tackle oil and filter with the correct guidance, anything else on a car if this age maybe not! But you never know!

Good tip on the wheels 🤐.

The 3.0si is basically a 15 - 17 year old car that was originally designed in 1998. What could go wrong?

Read the FAQ and look up the different issues that can and probably will go wrong.

Once you get everything fixed or replaced they're actually quite reliable.

Annual servicing is roughly £130 for parts.

Budget for £1000 - £2000 extra to get things fixed or get a list of things that are wrong with the car you get and work through everything from mechanical and electrical to leaks and cosmetics.

You might also want to start looking for a new wife!

Or none at all if he really wants to do what he wants

Hello and welcome OP, enjoy the search

Reading that list I think you've spent a fair bit of time on here!

Anyway welcome to the madhouse and good luck finding the right one.

Just bear in mind that less than 1,000 3.0Si Roadsters were registered in the UK so you may need to travel and/or be a bit flexible on spec.

Think he might have copied my signature on here!

I think you may be right - still if you were thinking of selling you'd have a ready buyer!

I did indeed, it’s the customisation in any hobby that makes it special and sometimes expensive!

At least you've confessed!

But you'll struggle to find another! Based on this database a forum member compiled:- http://perso.numericable.fr/tonyz4c/index30si.html
only 4 Silver Grey ones with black seats and Piano Black trim made it to the UK, and one was an Auto. So I suspect there is only one with Brembo brakes, HEL braided hoses, etc!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but while the UK got 51 3.0Si Roadsters in Carbon Black none had Caramel leather.

So you might need to make some more upgrades to get your ideal car!

Actually mine had Amarone which is honking and it was swapped over to black before I bought the car.
