I bought this 2006 E86 3.0 si manual 2 weeks ago, Metallic light grey? And red leather interior which is the color combo i was looking for, The wheels are powder coated in a dark Anthracite, At 61 years of age it is my first BMW, The Z4 E86 and the E36 328 coupe are really the only BMW's that i like! I absolutely love this car, It is proper driver focused IMO, Just great looking and great to drive, A bit leggy at 128K miles but the price reflected this and it came with a wad of service history, As a retired vehicle mechanic in 1994 i am looking forward to learning more about it.

Welcome to the nut house and great to see another Coupe on the forum . Where about are used based ?

Barnstaple North devon. I've got the usual jobs to do on it like the oil filter housing and oil cooler oil leaks, I've got the part's and i am getting stuck into it tommorow! Cheers.

I hope it all goes well tomorrow.

It's worth checking the cam-cover gasket too as they often leak as they also get brittle with age.

And the electric water pump will die at some point, causing overheating in a mile or less. The water pump on my first E86 died at 60K miles, but my second seemed to be on the original at 91K when I sold it. My 325i with the same engine needed a new pump at 135K, but I don't know if it was the original or a replacement. I'm playing water pump roulette with my current 330i! Anyway if you don't know if/when your car had a new one you might want to replace it as preventative maintenance to avoid being stranded/waiting to be recovered! Just don't buy one from BMW as they charge over £500 for the Pierburg pump you can buy elsewhere for about half that.

But having discovered RWD manual BMWs in 2005 I haven't been without one since so keep on enjoying the drive. :driving:

Thanks for the welcome! @Mr Tidy the previous owner fitted a Pierburg water pump and thermostat as preventive maintenance about 2K miles ago so that's taken care of for now, Valve cover gasket is just starting to get a little wet so i will tackle that next month with new bolts and a new valvetronic motor gasket as well, Thankyou for the advice, I didn't get a chance to do the Oil/Cooler housing gaskets today as my Daughter is over from Melbourne and she wanted to do stuff so i am hoping to tackle it next weekend, Also replacing the Drive belt, Tensioner, Idler pulley and micky mouse coolant flange whilst i am in there! Cheers.

That's great news about the water pump.

It sounds like you've pretty much got everything else covered, and they're all things that shouldn't need boing again for ages, so then you can just enjoy it. :driving:

Hi everyone, I started to do the oil filter housing/Oil cooler seals just now and i can't even remove the plastic oil cooler cover as there is no clearence with the slam panel! I had it in my head that removing the plastic slam panel cover would give better access but it doesn't so i didn't bother! I take it you have to unbolt the oil filter/Cooler as a complete assembly, Get the plastic cover off and then seperate the 2 items or do you have to remove the inlet manifold? As for the Aux belt, Tensioner and idler pulley there is so little room, Does the cooling fan assembly have to be removed? I would appreciate someone who has done this job getting back to me, Cheers.

Hi. I have managed to remove that black cover before without needing to dismantle anything. It is very tight though and you may get a couple of scratches on it.
The belt tensioner is very tight to move.
Lift the fan out for access. Look at the fan from the front. Big plug on the top left as you look at it. Then a torx screw near that. Other side a smaller plug into a square box, and a plastic rivet near that. Then just lift the fan up and out.
There is hole in the tensioner where you are supposed to fit a rigging pin to hold it over while you fit a new belt. I could not get the tensioner to move over far enough. Ended up getting another pair of hands to slip the belt over while I leant on the tensioner.

Ok, Well this afternoon i have decided to go full preventative maintenance as it is on 128K miles and it is a keeper, I've just ordered both replacement Febi Disa valves and a full Febi CCV kit so the inlet manifold is coming off! I've also been on Opie oils and settled on Motul 8100 X-Clean 5w-40 oil for it's oil change with a Bosch oil filter which i already have, Also i have bought a Febi oil filter housing cap for peace of mind, I'm going to BMW in Barnstaple tommorow to order inlet manifold and throttle body to manifold seals as i can't find any other suppliers online, If anyone has a link to a supplier i have missed please chime in! Cheers.
