After owning my 3.0i 2004 since April I today sold it again. It has been a fun summer with the car (8.000km added), loads of thrills however this was not my dream car. My main reason for not holding on to the Z is that it did not add very much in addition to what I get from my golf GTI. Sure, the open roof was fun but the driving experience was not better in the Z (in my humble opinion).

Are you mad? No offence. What are you getting now? I don't think a z4 and a golf are comparable? The only similarity they have is that they are both German, but in different leagues in every other way. You will never turn heads in a golf, not even a R32, as it essentially looks like most golfs, or at least to the untrained eye. Nothing else looks like a Z4 (unless it's black, in which case the batmobile is close).

Haha, spot on! Considering a 996 for next spring, so that sounds like a plan mate!
 
I agree! The Z has a shitty build quality (compared to the golf), isn't THAT much quicker and is more expensive to run and maintain.

Of course the golf does not compare on the looks and isn't a soft top.

Yup, you pretty much summed it up! With £1.000 of tuning the GTI is faster. No head turner admittedly, but hey, did I buy the car for me or for the people standing around?

I really like my Z4 Coupe, but I do know what you mean. :wink:
 
Hmm - this is all subjective, but my 3, 4 or maybe 5 pennies are:

Some stuff is objective:

1. The Z4 3.0 or 3.0Si is faster than a GTI - you can't argue with the figures
2. The Z4 is still a refined car that you can use everyday, based on a (relatively) normal platform (3-series)
3. It has a better layout and drivetrain to most hot hatches (rear wheel drive, straight 6 etc)

On the subjective front:

1. A turbo charged hot hatch may well feel faster and the performance is probably easier to access day to day
2. I think the driving position of a hot hatch is some way off something like a Z4 / Boxter etc - I just prefer being lower down
3. The looks - all down to what you prefer

I miss my Mini Cooper S hugely - it was probably slightly more fun to drive than the Z4 - but the Z4 is much better to own as a whole given that I don't need the practicality as my wife's car fill that need. What makes it for me though is the engine - I think I may place more importance than others on this - but I would find it diffiflt to go back to a 4 cylinder forced induction engine now...

Anyway - Golf GTI is a great car, huge fun - so enjoy!
 
you're comparing apples with eggs.........the two cars have nothing in common except four wheels. you might as well say the Z4 is a better drive than a Trabant - well of course it is but so what?....plus the Golf dosn't have the best reputation for reliability now does it.... 8)

Z4's interior build quality is no where near golf's...
 
The Z4 interior is fine though - its not bad in anyway. Indeed from a design perspective it beats and then spits on the Golf which in my opinion looks pretty low rent - design perspective here, not how it is screwed together.

Are we talking build quality or perceived quality - very different things!

I've had NO problems with interior quality in the Z4 - and I'm suprised at the comments about the quality - when the Z4 came out, the interior was hailed as being a big step forward from the Z3, but recently its been critisised. Rattles - I haven't had any to be honest, so maybe I've dodged that bullet. The door handles could be a little better, very similar to the X3.

Would I want my Z4 to be as refined as Golf? No! Its supposed to be a roadster, not a hatchback - but it is very refined compared to a Boxter (which is quite noisy ALL the time, whereas the Z4 is quiet while cruising).
 
I'm an (ex) dubber, coming from a Golf and Corrado background.

Personally I find the current crop of VWs very boring and bland, I like to own something a little different from the constant stream of 3-Series, A3s and Golfs I see on my trip to and from work every morning, something that people want to talk about at the petrol pumps or office car park, the lovely photo you've attached to your post illustrates exactly what I mean.

The only VAG replacement I would have considered for my much loved Corrado VR6 would have been the new Scirocco, but I am loathed to spend £24k on a 2.0L VW. The most disappointing thing about the Rocco for me is the current lack of a 6 pot engine.

I've only had the Z4 for a week and given my love for my VR6 the Z4 had to really impress to convince me I’d done the right thing, but so far I am completely satisfied I made the right decision in not going the route of the above mentioned 3-Series/A3s/Golf owners.

There's nothing wrong with a Golf GTi of course, they are just different cars (and the current offering isn't for me), performance wise I don’t see how you can compare a RWD straight 6 to a FWD 4 pot.

I'd take my VR Rado over a current generation GTi any day of the week on looks, performance, talking point, drive, everything! ;)
 
Just got home - seriously, 3 litre straight 6 out in front, lovely, creamy sound - more shove than you really need (this is a debate everytime I drive - when I drive I'm happy, any other time I hanker after an //M - repeat after me "I must pay off my mortgage, I must pay off my mortgage").

Could not imagine going back to a 4 pot for my fun car.

TH3R4POR - my previous car interests have been Mini's, original and BMW, so I guess I'd like to think I understand where you're coming from. Currently Ithere isn't a hatchback that I would really consider and rival to something like the Z4 (I say something like it - because I understand that some people wouldn't want a Z4, they may want a Boxter or a 370Z etc), a decent roadster with a decent engine is just more desirable.

People I know who have hot hatches (like Focus ST's (or Rs's on order), Golf GTI's) take the piss out of me for having a hairdressers car - but always end by saying "to be honest, I'd love something like that - just can't take the lack of four seats". I think that really says it all!
 
I've been looking for a replacement to the Rado for 3-4 months now, and found very few models that interested me (or to be more accurate, excited me). I ended up shortening the list to 350z or Z4s, the 350z is a bit of a weapon too ;)

Straight off the block there are many brands that don't appeal (Ford, Vauxhall/Opel, anything French) but that is maybe just me.

It had to look right, have reliability, build quality (no matter what you say, Z4s don't have bad build quality) be a 6(+ ;)) pot, and be different. Very few cars tick all the boxes for me.
 
Quite agree with all these comments about blandness of cars like the Golluf, and as was said above, they are different cars for heavens sake! How can you possibly compare a two-seat ragtop with a four seat hatchback???????


Having said all that, if you asked me what my all-time favourite classic is, I would have to say a MkII 8v Golluf GTi...... there was never anything to touch it as an all-rounder, at least til the bloody fuel pump went west as it always did.... :headbang:

I had a golf gti MKv for 12 months and the interior build is terrible. the 3 door sounds like your in a wind tunnel over 60 miles an hour and there was so many rattles..Even the technician at VW said to me on a test drive to identify rattles that they were a nightmare. search any vw forum around build quality and you wil see..in my opinion if you want quality interior then go audi everyone else is playing catch up. Yeah Z4 not perfect but show me a car that is...doesn't exsist, but the Z4 is fast, fun economical for a 3 litre. I understand some people prefer turbo's due to power delivery ...me ..i love the sound and revs of a big N/A engine.
 
good luck to you mate, but I can't agree with you on the golf vs z thing :?

I've driven an 06' gti and although it's a great car, it's a front drive!

each to their own though - all the best!
