Test drove one Z4 E85 - impressions; comments welcome

I did a quick test drive in a Z4 today. 2.5 pre face lift engine with around 25000miles on the clock.

This is a long post so if you don't feel like reading, tell me why car makes grinding noise on turning to one side (like rubber hitting fender), and are repairs done to it look normal for the year and that milage (see list below).

As it's a 2005, I was expecting it to feel tired but with only 25k miles it felt very solid in fact. Brakes were strong, car stayed exactly on the course during my emergency braking... I said to sales man "I will test brakes now" - and did it like they've taught me in BMW Driving School - slammed on the pedal - the guy's face was priceless. Suspension felt solid, steering a little vague at times, no clonking from rear, no water sloshing around in the back.. not much noises from interior, in fact i really liked that exhaust tone.. I miss my 320i E36 with 6cyl engine and the noise reminded why I loved BMWs in the first place. (i drive a diesel 4 now so you can imagine). All electronics works well, and even though I've not done the 24 point inspection on it felt OK.

After driving a bit back and forth, I see that tyres are giving a low pressure noise - must be the fact that it was standing for quite a bit. On turning to one side (right) i hear a small grinding noise - sounds like ball bearing but maybe others know what it can be? It is almost like the rubber is touching fender or smth on turning. Only on one side.

Roof is fully automatic and operated well. I was amazed at how nice it felt inside (relatively speaking) at only +5C outside. :) It has wind deflector too, and hard top preparation is done but no hardtop.

The car will need a Inspection I after 4000 km. If not Inspection I then at least some sort of liquids filters change.

It has styl 203 17in rims which I liked.
Extra options are limited to Dynamic Dricing Control (What's this, an extra?), sports leather steering, and OBC. Seats are non sport, it has auto climate and BMW Professional stereo.

Colour is Black Saphire Metallic that needs a serious polishing as someone left nasty swirl marks all over the hood. So a full proper detail job is on cards, including biege orgeon leather interior which looks a bit dirty (or never cleaned).

Then I went inside and looked at the repair history. Now you guys tell me if this is normal. Roads here are average - some good some bad. So:

- on 2nd day it was bought, they repainted hood and wing - a fence fell on the car from construction side. Cost 300 euros.
- They replaced windshield after 2000miles (rock chip) (insurance)
- the hydro motor operating soft top was changed twice over 4 years, last time a year ago. (last one cost 200 euros with work)
- Rear shocks were replaced (warranty)
- front bushings replaced (warranty)
- front steering rack was replaced (warranty)
- Some small things as well but these were the major repairs and they've shown me the bills for all of them. Always serviced at official dealer, FSH.

Love the avatar!

For a 2005 it seems to have had a fair bit of work done to it in my opinion.

"- the hydro motor operating soft top was changed twice over 4 years, last time a year ago. (last one cost 200 euros with work)"

I dont understand this bit. Does this mean the motor was replaced twice? :o

Steering rack, bushes, shocks....for a 2005 car that sounds liek a lot of work..

Isnt there a problem with some steering racks being 'sticky' when hot?

motor gone twice is not what I would expect...

Suspension - does it mean the springs or more? Springs are common...

oh and Style 203 wheels are 18" not 17" :D

yes, for the top it says "pump" on their screen and "hydro" and it was quite cheap and fixed twice.
the steering rack - thats a 1000 euro thing so if it was relaced it must have been some damage although under warranty and on poor roads if there is even a slightest movement they will replace it - therefore it's not something I'm worried too much about.

Motor going twice though - if it's uncommon here -- who knows why so often. Cold climate? and wet? I'll be ordering a full inspection on it in any case if I decide to buy it so they will be able to tell what else needs addressing.

no idea about the little grinding noise on turning?

Could well be environmental... where mine used to be parked outside there were a couple of trees with little leaves. I didn't really think anything of them falling on the car. But over time enough of them made their way in formed a nice mulch around the motor - I suspect having first blocked the drainage. One day it stopped working. It wasn't until I had the new one fitted that I realised how slow it had become. Now I get the channels checked when the car's in the garage.

Only other suggestion would be that the roof is too tight and putting a strain on the motor. But then the latches above the windscreen wouldn't allign correctly... as happened with mine after they repalced the motor!

Have you considered contacting the place that did the work? Everyone keeps pretty good records these days.

The roof going on mine scares me. You cant really tell until its to late..

Id get them to put it up on a ramp so you can get them to turn steering lock to lock and see if theres any interference, could be something simple like oversized tyres or dislocated mudflaps, or something worse....might also help to see what state the underside is in just to reassure yourself that the bush/suspension work isn't related to it being driven at speed up a dried riverbed or something like that!!

First two on the list are externally influenced. Hood motor - can't say, but better replaced twice then not at all surely? Suspension, sounds like it might just have been subjected to some "spirited driving"...the ramp inspection may or may not confirm that....

Good luck though

sounds like one of those cars made on a friday afternoon. Mine is a 2003 53 plate with 58,000 miles on it, and has been faultless. Despite the mileage it still feels great to drive ?.

if i doubt, i would walk away. Im sure there will be the right car out there for you.

yup, full ramp it will go on, full inspection, of course. but not just yet.

it was official dealership that did repairs, they were super nice to me, showed me everyting on screen down to the bills. the general manager was actually selling it as i showed up the day before and salesman was away (got very sick) but noone warned me so they looked quite stupid. BUt service today was suprisingly good.

ill keep yous postd if anything develops here..

well just be careful out there kartman, a motor dealer being 'super nice' and falling over themselves to show you what a good buy this is just makes me go all twitchy....... :)

Steering rack was most likely sticky steering prob had mine replaced is a factory fault in early cars.

Bushes is normal had mine replaced but as said by Easty plenty of cars out there walk away if not happy all the best with your search

Maybe not in Estonia..... :)

thin market yes. but it's not a trade in, so i'm not desperate to get it. ;) i actually see nothing wrong with my car. just want smth smaller and zippier. :)

pre facelift cars have the soft top motor exposed to any water that doesn't drain away. if the drain holes are blocked it will corrode and stop working. Later cars have a plastic cover to prevent this. so it's not an uncommon problem.

so there is no upgrade or retrofit to fix the remedy? Damn, that's silly.

Can anyone show me where these drain holes are? This problem is a major concern.

i heard there is a DIY but it's a hard job to do on your own.. but i'd like to know if there is a DIY and prevention care that can help the motor live. It was 300 euros with labour to replace it which is not a LOT but it's not little either.

it is a lot - the labour requires removing the whole roof mechanism and takes hours.

Shipkiller has an excellent post about how to do it, but if you're not pretty savvy already it's going to cost a good amount if you just hand it to a garage.

There's also some posts on here about how to clear drain holes, using compressed air.

Another point to note is that if the roof motor has been swapped it should be the later design which is sealed and thus it's less likely to have this problem again.

it was fixed in 2007 - you reckon it's the newer one? Any way to check, do they have different part numbers or the same? If same it would be kinda of hard to tell.
