Test driven one

Just got back from a spin out in a 2.0i which is a surprise by the amount of shove it has. More importantly though is the chassis, very very stable, feels fantastic tbh, a world away from the jelly E89, very taut, light informative steering, so much more feel, it might be roughly the same weight as the E89 but it does a hell of a job disguising it. Seats are superb, shame you can’t raise the seat squab on its own or spec cooling but very comfy nonetheless. Plenty of kit, personally I like the HUD, a great array of settings to get it how you like, it’s not at all crashy in sport, even tauter with no detectable shake. Still nicely firm in comfort without being harsh.

It’s a very very good car imho. You would have to spend approx another 15k to spec up a 2.0 Boxster to match it, even more for a GTS. A worthy alternative to a Boxster. The only thing that lurks in the back of the mind is would it stay fresh and exciting after a year or so like I think a boxy would, or would it become too familiar too soon.

That sounds very positive John. Did you get to run up the bypass in the 4.0i ? Made your mind up yet ?.

I took the M40i out for a test drive today and it is a beast. Fully agree with all the above. Felt more reminiscent of the E85 in terms of drive style and feel.

The sheer amount of tech is insane. Loved the HUD. The salesman demo’d the self parking and reversing stuff and it really amazed me how intelligent it is when it comes to parking itself. Looks a LOT better in person too. Still don’t like those alloys though.

Just need to know if those fabric tops are gonna have roof motor problems like the E85 does or if they’ve actually fixed that this time.

Oh and boot space is huge. A real win in that department.

Went up to my local dealers to have a look today & managed to get a spin in this monster!!
Apart from the front grill (which is an absolute disgrace imho) i was really impressed with the looks, loved the interior although I’d want the seats to grip a bit more, 1st impressions were abit yeah it’s smooth, sits well, ride not harsh, steering sharp, can push on when promted, then you set it to sport :fuelfire: that transform it to a lunatic! The exhaust noise is something else!! It pins you back it the seat, just couldn’t stop smiling, the gear change was sharp, not to early (I didn’t try the paddles) it’s proper car in that mode, I didn’t want to get out tbh, really shocked how good it sounded, lots of pops & crackles.
Serious amount of money but some car, just wish that front end was more aggressive, grill is a joke, so much worse in real life.

Yeah the exhaust pops and crackles a lot and it sounds great. Sport mode completely turns it into a different car. Opened it up on the motorway and it was insane.

Looks cheap and full of plastic. Awful. If I was spending £50k+ on a car, no contest to go for a low miles 2016 Porsche.

I went to my dealer for a look today, though they don’t have a demonstrator in yet. When I first sat in it I was overwhelmed by the tech tbh, having just gotten out of my M. There was lots of leather, seat was very comfy and tbh I think I could get used to it. But as I said to the dealer it’s all about the drive because it just ‘feels’ so much larger when sat in it. So I’m going to book a test drive in a M40i for a hoot in the next couple of weeks.

Regarding the grilles, yeah, not ace in silver. The car in my dealer was black with the ‘black pack’ though, and getting rid of all that contrasting silver really looks an awful lot better. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it given all the negativity around the looks. Most cars have a bad angle, the metal you have to squint and be in just the right place I reckon. Looking forward to having a wee go sometime soon.

Sounds like you had a ball John. Looks forward to seeing if you end up placing an order and being the Forum member to own one

Have you seen one in the flesh Chutley..? If not you’ll be surprised at the interior, cheap and plasticky it ain’t..

Need more of a test first Nige, although I was very very impressed with it. :)

Not yet Jim, going to have a much longer test first, have to remember that Boxster, ‘‘‘tis a very fine thing.... :D

It was today then. Must pay more attention in class. :D Some interesting first impresions. Hopefully I will spot one on the road soon.

I'm sorely tempted to order one. I'm probably just bored, but I've been totally won over by seeing on in the flesh today and driving it. Not a huge fan of the colours and alloy options though. This is the only configuration I could get that I liked.

Yeah, the colour choices are not ace, and the red lava leather is more orange than I’d like. Maybe more options will be introduced ?

It’s interesting what views people have, I found the 20i really crap tbh all the shove of my C200 estate. Every day normal. Not bothered by tech any more, it’s outdated by year 2. Chassis I agree with, it’s good.

Not that special as a £47,000 car tho..

Definitely. I’m looking forward to seeing what options are introduced for the LCI.

A 3 to 4 year wait....?? Good enough now not to leave it that long imo, why waste your life waiting, hardly horrible colours surely...?

Wouldn’t you like to try the full fat car Maniac, make the most of that chassis..?
