temperature in red then normal

hi am new to this so here goes,just bought a 2003 z4 auto 2.5 99000 miles, on the home the temp gauge went from 12.00 o'clock to red with light on and the amber coolant light came on then within one minute temp went back to 12.00 o'clock normal but coolant light stayed on ? checked when at home found coolant leaking from sensor on bottom hose on left side of thermostat the o ring had gone,replaced it,still same problem,changed sensor in bottom of expansion tank which measures coolant level,same problem,not sure what to do now thought it could the thermostat or maybe the water pump.by the way the engine does not appear to be over heating any help would be greatly appreciated,

Have you bleed the radiator correctly? I don't actually know where the temp sensor/thermostat is situated but it could cause this problem! Had it on a ford a few years ago.
