Temp Gauge going to Max

Hi all

Unfortunately a few months ago i connected the battery the wrong way round on my Z4M and have had to fix a few things to get it back to normal mainly the alternator and cooling fan.

The subs aren't working which I imagine I just need to replace the amp if I can find one.

The question I have is my temp gauge on the dash reads normally most the time but sometimes goes all the way to max and stays there until I restart the engine (It returns to correct reading when I do). I have replaced the coolant sensor which hasn't changed anything.

INPA is showing a code for a ground short in the instrument cluster. Does anyone know if this is something I can look at? Would putting the battery in backwards have shorted the cluster?

Really hope to get this fixed as its the last thing before I can list her for sale.

Cheers

Jon

Wow, putting the battery in the wrong way around really takes some doing. Didn't even think the leads would reach, must have really worked at it! All had senior moments like that though, I remember once when I was 19 trying to undo some caliper bolts which seemed MASSIVELY tight so kept putting longer and longer extension bars on the ratchet until...finally....snap! Bolt sheared. Only then did I realise I had the ratchet set wrong (tighten) :headbang:

Not too surpised about the alternator dying but I would have thought pretty much everything else should be protected by fuses. Are you 100% sure you have been around every fuse and checked for continuity?

You could send the instrument cluster to someone like ECU Testing who I'm sure would be able to diagnose and repair for you.

Some cars are positively earthed to the body... which I found out when installing a stereo in my mate’s Bond Equipe many years ago... nearly burnt the fibreglass thing to the ground

Otherwise good luck sorting, fingers x get sorted ASAP

Yep every fuse 3 times, had to buy a £680 cooling fan from BMW so spent a few days checking everything first. I was so tired when I did it, I think because moving the battery on the M was an afterthought to allow for the exhaust the terminal cables are surprisingly long and fit easily either side still not one of my brightest moments.

I've seen a forum member on a different forum who has done a lot of work (2 years) trying to fix this problem so will probably speak to him.
He fixed his by replacing the alternator he had already replaced. They are not cheap so I hope it is not that.

I just want this car sold now I wonder if listing it with a problem with the oil temp sensor would mean a large money hit.
