A year out ? sounds good if planned & not enforced ,

Good shout. In fact virtualisation skills on both MS and VMWare are still in demand

Also big data is still immature enough that people are mystified and paying big bucks for people who can help them through the minefield.

Good database admins also command high salaries

VDI virtual desktop infrastructure? I did some work on VNC a while back. I expect it will all come rushing back like PTSD once I fire up a compiler. I hope so anyway, or I am stuffed, - stacking shelves at Tesco or Building Maintenance will be my lot :)

Desktop virtualisation comes in a couple of guises. Thin client (Citrix, MS terminal services etc) and CHV or client hosted virtualisation. This is more like a client version of what you'd see on a server. Different client images for different usage models

Some interest from businesses for CHV as "bring your own device" becomes popular.

Thin client only really good for fixed users, call centre operators etc. and what you offset from the client you move into the data centre so the usual "fit, form, function" planning applies

I have been busy, I am winding down from buying, renovating and selling a few houses. I seem to be in the keeper, I need to diversify or be eaten by my cats. A mate has some html5 app contracting available but it isn't really my field, I don't want to let him down. 2013 is definitely going to be arse in gear time...

Thanks for the tips.

....its always good to have something to aim for , a drifter produces nothing ....

i'm going to drift. see what happens, i suspect i will produce something. :) once i've built my garage and refurnished a house.

and it's all getting a bit fraught in this forum these days...is everybody's menstrual cycle aligned? spending a bit too much time on here?

only joking... :P

Glad to see you have set your targets & look forward to seeing the Z nestled in its new home this time next year

Just echoing the point on database admins, any SQL Server and Oracle skills are a big plus, I work across the admin and buisness intelligence field and there is plenty of work out there if you are interested in this area.

2012 has been pretty crap, my wife ( at 39) has had to have 2 cancer operations, my sister (at 54) has had one cancer op,and the tumor has started growing again, so another plus a load of shite is coming her way.I'm having surgery on 4th Jan for a knee problem which may stop me riding motorbikes, and I've spend the last 7 days in bed following a year where I got promoted, but still worked far too many hours and made myself ill. So 2013 can only get better. My plans, start the business I've been thinking about for 2 years but done little about, ( the pleasure I'd get from telling my employer to get stuffed would be immense), get fit once my knee is fixed, look after my lovely wife and make sure she is free of cancer and pray for my sister that she recovers from her illness.Get my house extension finished and make more time for my family. Do a track session at Spa and take my soon to be completed Dakar replica rally bike ( 1986 BMW 1000 GS) to Morocco for a blast round the desert. :D
