Thanks for the honest info and advice on NHS dentists - frightening.
The frightening bit is that someone who works for a PCT calls NHS dentists butchers! If that's the case, then the PCT should report them all, with the evidence, to the General Dental Council, where they would face disciplinary procedures with the possibility of them being struck off.
Calm down Calm down!!! Yes I work for the PCT, but have nothing to do with Dentists. I do IT support for GP surgeries.
My comments were referring to 1 particular dental surgery that I used to use, my wife used to use, other family members STILL use!
They are run by a private company and accept NHS patients. My comments about this surgery are based on what I and others have experienced there, so they are my views, not the PCT's!!
For instance, I went for Root Canal treatment once and she said "we'll try no injection at first". Sod that!
My neice went several times complaining of pain and they kept saying nothing wrong - then went private and had a huge absess.
I'm sure not all NHS dentists are like this!
I think the best thing is to find a private dentist that also does NHS lists, if you can!
The cost of dentistry has always ben met by the patient (recently anyway), even if on NHS. Is it subsidised? I dont know. But yes, private is expensive and for many prohibitive.
Paying National Insurance doesnt mean you get free dental care - you should be able to register with an NHS dentist, although I seem to recall it can be difficult, and many go without treatment.
If your son was in real pain, then he didn't do any favours by not accepting your offer to pay, even though he probably did so on moral grounds, and yes, it is wrong, but thats the way it is.
If we stopped health tourists or Private patients getting to top of waiting lists then going NHS this would save money, possibly for other things.
For your £15+ check up at an NHS dentist you are meant to get 10 minutes of oral hygene advice. Last time I went, I was in and out in 3 minutes! I timed it.
At the end of the day, they are all businesses trying to make money. The surgery I mention has an awfully high turnover of dentists, I am sure they just work to get experience!
