I can't speak for the British Education System ...
But over here in the New World ...
I taught tech subjects ..Woodworking (Building Construction), Welding and Machine Shop (Manufacturing) and Drafting / Architecture - Autocad (Design)
They kept changing the names, and none of it was 'required'. That means the success of your program depended on establishing relevant curriculum delivered in a humane way.
Not many A Level kids take Tech, but the real joy in the business is when you connect with a kid and show him what he can accomplish.
One of my most rewarding classes was a grade 10 'general level" (ie. not university bound) welding class. It was maxed out at 24 with 10 "multi-exceptional" special ed kids...
Tech being such a hands on experience is made fore kids like this. The trick is to challenge them with a project that they can see value in...

I miss the classroom and the kids ...You can keep the politics though..
And even bumping into the meanest sob I ever taught 20 years ago is a positive experience.

Also, I can no longer be doing with all the politicking, paperwork, etc. I will hopefully be changing direction in the next couple of years and concentrating on my Open University work and Stickytarts (Google the latter - not what you think !)
