Fuel will never be the same price again. Currently China uses 600 times more than the UK does per day. They have almost doubled their fossil fuel use in 10 years, modern chinese families can now afford cars and luxuries, not forgetting the fuel used for production.
A man overheard me talking about fuel and modern creature comforts and he said that he thinks in the next 30 years we will live in a mad max civilisation!!! :?

As more and more cars are built to be £35 or less to tax then higher tax brackets will keep increasing to compensate.
I'd much rather road tax was scrapped stick it ontop fuel, then you pay for what you use. If you have an Eco car you will up less, paying less tax. But if you have an Eco car and drive 60,000 miles a year you pay for it.
Where will government income come from if everybody drove a VW blue motion of sorts doing 60-90 mpg and paid less than £35 a year to tax it?. (if this happend deseil would rocket in price and I bet petrol would go down)

Totally agree. Scap the current road tax system and add a bit more onto the fuel duty (if they really have to...). Would be much fairer system.tomscott said:

Totally agree with the above, I do 35-40,000 miles a year in my company car, 09 plate and now on 104,000 miles, my ///M is insured for 5000 mpy, so £135 ish for 35-40K mpy and £465 for 5000 mpy, go figure!!

Just checked - mine was £260 for the Z in February, will easily do 16 or 17k in a year. My wife's Honda (2.5l, probably less than 4k miles a year now she's not working) will now be £270 as the tax has just gone up. Considered paying 6 months on the Honda and then paying a year in September... Then did the maths and actually I'll end up more out of pocket trying to avoid next year's rise on her car 
To be honest hers needs replaced, so a newer lower emissions vehicle is on the cards...
