If you pay by direct debit, will you still be buying 1 year or 6 months in advance? What happens when you sell the car with say 4 months remaining, do you need to keep the DD going until it expires? Or does the new owner need to setup a direct debit, that could be a pain! :? :?

I would suggest that under the monthly DD proposal the option to sell a car with some unexpired VED won't exist.

Agree - you'll just pay to the end of the current month inc. any adjustments for early cancellation, cancel the DD and let the new owner sort themselves out.
Should be really simple and smooth.

I'd prefer to pay tax at the pump - I pay a fortune for my ///M and don't drive it much. My Westfield is probably the same cost per mile as the ///M in road tax as it doesn't cover many road miles (except on a trailer). My 320d might end up costing me more I suppose...
same as you ....pay as you go

But paying monthly will cost 5% more over the year then if bought annually.

So if you plan to sell your car within a year you are better off paying (slightly) more and go monthly.

I wonder if those winter cossetted zeds ( and caterhams etc) will come out for a month if you can tax and refund for one month - without relying on the DVLA to shuffle some bits of paper round for a bit so another month starts.

that was my thought exactly, its a pest as often i want to use the westy for 7/8 months. if you could basically do 1 month at a time it would be great.

i would worry about putting it on fuel that it would increase the tax costs of a car. i havnt done the maths properly but roughly speaking ~46mpg=10mpl so on 10K an increase in 1p/litre would add £10.00 great you would save but can see the govt only putting 1ppl?? i guess even 5ppl would only be £50 but if your car was only £30 to insure before your worse off. also consider the knock on effect on inflation/RPI etc increaseing duty on fuel will increase the price of delivery on everything.

It'll all be done online with a slow paper based option with existing checks the car is insured and MOT's as appropriate.

We can be fairly sure there will be a mechanism to stop you insuring for a month and rebating or cancelling, without at the least incurring a penalty of some sort to compensate for lost revenue. If we could I'd be adding and removing my Jeeps for a month at a time ad hoc as events arose.

They'll Just link the database for Tax/Insurance/Mot!

The only problem is that we will have no visual reminder.

Yes accepted you will pay a 5% surcharge on each monthly payment. Payment of the VED annually will still work out cheaper and if you sell your car you can still pass on the unexpired portion of the VED as part of the car sale or alternatively get a refund from DVLA as is currently the case.

Hmm isn't direct debit usually a cheaper option to administer? Also a percentage penalty for paying by direct debit unfairly ramps up the cost for those who already pay most.

Does it really cost £25 to administer for a band M car and £1.50 for a green car.

Would rather they just remove it and put a small amount on fuel duty.

But monthly direct debit often attracts a surcharge against paying a lump sum up front or a quarterly bill. Just look at car insurance as a good example.
Personally I only use a direct debit option where they don't add a surcharge eg. Council tax, Electricity and Water and Sewage charges. I pay my BT phone line rental up front and get almost £50 discount off the annual cost.
You have to make your money work for you.
