Tappety tap tap!

Just booked my car in for an Inspection 1 at Dick Lovett Hungerford after hearing the good customer service story on this thread and also because they were cheaper than my local options. Turns out my car's chassis number is just one digit greater than the OPs - how weird is that.

Assuming that the numbers are applied sequentially, they must have been built on the same day.

Glad to be or service! Weird to think that your car was probably only one behind or in front of mine on the production line in America. I`m missing my car again, this time my fault, well work, not the car. Only managed to put on 200 miles since I got it back, an now in Ireland, then Dubai, then Holland then Slovenia, should get to drive her again on the 22nd. In the meantime I can`t get the misses to give up the 520d loan car, she`s still hanging on to it for dear life. Goes back Friday much to her chagrin, hopefully I have created another that prays at the temple of the blue propeller!! Get back to your 206 woman!

Where does it say his VIN ? :) Only interested as you're 2006 too, mine is 00026 which I'm told is probably the first non-prototype RHD Z4M Roadster.

Sadly, probably wasn't directly behind, sorry to ruin it. Part of the vin is the model, market, engine, etc so its possible that others could have been between, pretty damned close though, def the next of the same model, engine and market....

from my discoveries, the Z4M has it's own prefix, so all the same model / engine, but agreed on LHD / RHD.

When I booked my car in, I didn't have my VIN so the guy on the phone used an existing customer's VIN, in this case the OP. When I rang back with my VIN, he told me it was one digit greater. Can't remember what it is now though.

So my car goes into the garage on the 17th....

Amongst other things they will be looking at my noisy valve train....

I fuly expect them to say its normal and would be adjusted at the service, even though I only have 20k miles on the car and the wear should not be at the adjustment required level yet....

I expect to have to try and explain to them that the wear should not occur until 50-70k miles and that something on my car is accelerating the wear....

Let the fight begin!!!

Good luck with that, I hope you get it sorted. A bit of valve-train noise is pretty normal on the S54, mine was in a whole other league. Mine sounded like a DAF at high rpm and a sewing machine at low rpm and was horribly down on power. As previously written it had eaten 2 sets of cams in 24,000 miles.

Yeh.... mine isnt that bad....

However, it does sound like a diesel at low RPM... cant hear it over the exhaust at high RPM..

Its pretty bad.... and at 20500 miles?? shouldnt happen... Ive not heard of anyone needing a valve/shim adjustment at such low miles unless there was a problem.

Funny you mention DAF, Im in engine development and DAF used to be my customer! And there engines sound pretty sweet!!

BMW check ( or are supposed to ) the valve clearances at Inspection 1 which is around the 24,000 mile point. A little wear would be usual and should be shimmed out by the dealer. Good luck!

Hi Guys,

A little advice needed. As you are aware I had my engine replaced under warranty, which I was more than happy about.

I`ve just reached about 1000miles and have booked her into Dick Lovett Hungerford for the running in check Friday, along with checking the steering alignment and rear off-side spring.

So, on the forums I`ve been told BMW put a lighter viscosity oil in these engines from new but speaking to the service manager (not the master technician Andy) my engine arrived dry so they filled with Castrol Edge. He`s saying that it will just require "checking over". This could be an error on his part and maybe I should wait to speak to the technician? Personally I`d rather a full oil and filter change but what are your thoughts?

Jonty

I am pretty sure they did the same with mine despite me questioning the same thing about running in oil etc.

Defo check it out though.

Jay

I would be worried a little about that. Def ask them to confirm. BMW put the 'running in' oil in the engines for a reason.

Guys, you'll need to change that oil at 1200 miles for break in.
Question for you that needed new engines :o what were the oil change intervals prior?
thanks

Mine had it's 1200 mile service, then it had an oil service at 9,800 at the dealer I bought it from, then I did one myself at 16,000 and the engine went at 22000.

Too much TLC if you ask me! Use 'em and abuse 'em. :)

It was probably the knock-off/counterfeit oil I used :P

My e34 M5 had 6,000 mile service intervals, and I did the oil about once a month, but that was used on track more than the Z4 is so needed regular changes and I wasn't worried about 30 minutes work and £40 of oil when I was spending £1000 a month on fuel.

Mine had its 1200 mile service, then oil service then insp. 1 then was replaced at 32,000 all by BMW main dealer.

It`s in today for its 1200 mile service again although as stated before it`s been run in on Castrol Edge. They are still changing oil and filter for a much reduced price. Strange that it arrived at dealers bench run but dry. Do we know for a FACT what oil these engines are run in on a less viscosity oil?

Jonty

Have you tried calling BMW GB and asking them? There does seem to be plenty of suggestion that a running in oil is used (on forums anyway) but then again I have read from some fairly clued up people that it is just a "myth" and the usual oil is used from new. Obviously changing the oil at 1200 is the key thing so I am sure it will be fine.
