Taking convertible top off?

I read that to take the top off shipkiller said that the top should be put down in order to take the top off and with the red handle not releasing any pressure I can only open my roof a 1/4 of the way. How am I gonna be able to take the top off to access the motor if I can't put the top down? Is there another way?

If you can open your roof a 1/4 of the way, does it not go down of it's own accord (very slowly)?

Mine does as when I was doing some work on it, I had to have it half open and it slowly fell back.

a) You can, with a little pressure, push the top further down even against full pressure (well, you could on mine)
b) it only needs to be half open to remove
c) you can get away with not removing the whole roof, just releasing and pulling up the pump side. Its a bit fiddly to get the pump out (youll have to either break the cable ties or the loop on the casing they are tied into) but It saves you taking the whole roof off (this is how I did it).
