Taken a gamble on the new daily

And you say I change cars a lot. That's three (at least) in a couple of years for you and Angela, Ian.

It was a Maxi (sorry; big Mini), then a lightbulb, now a Czech VW. Next it will be a "Build Your Dreams" Sealion or some such nonsense. How could anyone buy a car called BYD with model names so stupid? And for Chinese junk they ain't very cheap.
Funnily enough Andy the ŠKODA dealer we bought the car from in Hull also has a BYD franchise. So you never know.😀

And what car do you drive, a Skoda , that used to be bad until VW transformed it, but "Enyaq" presumably pronounced "n-yack"
Who dreams these names up ? I drive an n-yack. Give me a break

Yes Skodas had a terrible name. I remember all the jokes about them. Example, Q Where do you find a dipstick in a Skoda? A in the driver’s seat. There were loads them.
However, I have had a few over the years and they have been pretty decent. Two Fabia vRSs I owned were really good fun. I hope this one measures up too.🙏

Aren't they called Shkoda now?

They've been as good as any other VAG product for over 20 years now, even if they do come up with some strange model names that mostly begin with a K!

We recently bought a karoc 4x4 auto so madam can chauffeur her horse about, its actually a really good car to drive. Lift the bonnet and every thing is stamped VAG

Yep. Same as Kiev is now pronounced Keeeev, and Hyundai is now pronounced Hhhundie.
I can't bear to eat chicken Keeeev anymore!
We've gone all politically correct in the UK.
I remember when Nestle was called Nestles, not Nestlay; and don't get me started on Porschaa instead of Porsch.

Hi Ian,

I have the exact same Enyaq Sportline (Advanced Pack) as my company car.

Initially I battled our fleet manager to get another diesel, or keep the current (1 Series 118d M-Sport) but told all cars have to be EV.

I've had it 9 months now.

Range - 295-310 miles in summer, now the heaters are on and demister I'm getting 230-250 miles from a full charge.

Driving experience......

+ Very comfortable
+ All the kit and toys you can imagine (although the interactive screen could have some programmable shortcuts)
+ Accelerates like a scoulded cat
+ LED headlights are excellent
+ Boot is massive and swallows my MTB without taking the wheels off

- The adaptive cruise control is outright dangerous! A dozen times now, on the motorway at 70 mph. it scans ahead for speed limit signs, and its picked them up from side roads or somewhere, and slammed on the brakes to slow me down to 30 mph!!!!
- Lane assist is annoying and can't be turned off, only set to low. Still intervenes when crossing a white line to pass a parked car etc.
- Driving in 'B' mode is pointless. It's supposed to be the most efficient but I drive in 'D' mode as I get the same range and I like to feel in control, rather than just a passenger.
- Its a big lump and slows down like a boat, which is to be expected.
- Tyre wear isn't very good. 8,000 miles and already had a new set, yet given the weight I'm not sure if that's normal?

On the whole, I've enjoyed driving it and its very practical but I'd never buy one myself. I don't buy into the enviro argument and prefer the good old ICE

Hi Jon
I am really happy with the Enyaq so far. I agree with all your observations apart from not being able to switch off lane assist. On ours there are physical buttons under the screen. The one on the furthest left is labelled ASSIST. To switch off the assist functions you have to press this. It brings up a range of options on the screen. At the top is the option to switch off lane assist. So, yes you do need to do it each time you drive the car but it only takes a couple of seconds. I don’t find the lane assist function intrusive but it really annoys my wife so she switches it off every time she drives.
A plus for me has been the service we have had from our local Skoda agent in Lincoln. We bought the car from a Skoda dealer in Hull but needed to have a damaged air vent replaced. This was arranged to take place at our local dealer to save us travelling up to Hull. There was a bit of a delay before the job could be completed. We received a lovely hamper from Horton’s in Lincoln to thank us for our patience. In all the years I have bought BMWs I have never received such good service and we didn’t even buy the car from them.👏😀

Hi Ian,

Yes I know that button, I was meaning turing it off permanently :)

I'm glad you like the car and a bonus with the hamper :D

All cars built post about March 2024 (for the UK anyway) have to have lane assist and speed warnings defaulting to ON, due to the UK public not being able to think for themselves anymore! Apparently they can't be coded out anymore either, as manufacturers now lock the ECUs. All thanks to the Germans/ EU.

Utter PITA. On the Audi (which will be similar electronics to the Skoda), I can turn the lane assist off on the end of the indicator stalk, but the annoying speed limit 'bong' can only be turned off via the central screen which is not easy. Then of course it all comes back on next time the car is started.

Lane assist is DANGEROUS in my opinion and should be deleted from all cars immediately. Same with radar cruise control, that can also be extremely dangerous.

You won’t be able to go for a s**t without a poop app and having to press 17 haptic buttons to say you understand how dangerous bogs are and you’re not gonna stick your head in there and drown yourself soon….🙄

You’re right Andy these “assist “ functions are generally intrusive and irritating. Fortunately the ‘bong’ on the Skoda is on the quiet side. Either that or my hearing is getting worse. We sold the JCW Countryman because these so called safety functions drove us mad.😡

All that "assistance" stuff would drive me nuts too. Luckily the only interference feature I've had was Stop/Start on a 1 Series I had to keep turning off after the battery and starter motor died prematurely.

Assuming all that stuff will need to be working at MOT time I can see some big bills looming when any of it goes wrong outside of the warranty period.

The day I collected the little N I got the salesman to switch everything off permanently except for it automatically going into N mode when it knows there's an S bend approaching 😁

If it was a year newer, he wouldn't have been able to, though!

Good choice. Hardly a gamble when there are so many about and people generally seem very happy with them (despite our sketchy charging infrastructure). 👍

I rented a CX60 hybrid for a week once, incidentally, and liked it a lot more than I thought I would. Looks good, decent engine, lovely cabin and the autonomous driving actually works.

Elroq next for us, maybe, although I still don’t like buying/leasing new cars, if possible. It would be our first “SUV” as well, eeeeesh… 🤭

I thought most new cars had the option to switch all the nannying stuff off, like lane assist and speed awareness? I was driving a new Citroën C3 the other week and the press of a button provided a shortcut to switch it all off.

Its a bit a faff on the Hyundai as its all buried away in sub menus hence I asked the salesman to do it all.

You can turn stuff off but have to do it every time you start the car as they default to ON since 2024.
To turn the speeding bong off on my Audi requires going into at least three screens of sub menus. They make it difficult on purpose.

Ah ok, thankfully mine stays permanently off unless turned back on, that would make sense then as with the Citroen I had to press the button again on restarting the car. At least it was an easy button press unlike having to navigate through stupid screen menus.

Tim.

If one spends the first five minutes of every journey navigating submenus to switch off distracting warnings, is the post-2024 car safer or more dangerous?

I wonder if new accident black spots will develop in areas where the speed limit recognition mistakenly reads the speed limit on a neighbouring street and applies that to a car travelling on a major road, aggressively braking the car (as experienced by JonVR46).
