Tail of the Dragon - June 6th or 7th?

Just wondered if anyone would be around this weekend? Headed down with several cycles in my Z4M on Friday.

You just missed a get together last Monday, the 26th. It is too long of a drive for me to do it again so soon. There will be some more GTG on the THe Dragon somewhere around Homecoming, when everyone is heading down towards South Carolina. May want to try and hook up with group then :)

I saw the pictures from the 26th. Looked like a great time. I can't wait to get there. Maybe next time I can go when there are many Zs in the area.

:D
It was a GREAT drive/time! We were there early enough with little traffic and were able to push the cars a bit :driving: The speed limit is 30mph throughout, but I "managed" to stay at the top end of 2nd gear most of the time with a few short spurts in 3rd, before diving into the next corner.

318 curves in 11 miles says it all

I really have no idea at how fast I was able to go,,,,not enough time to look at the speedo :o

^^^ It isn't hard! There is no room for error, the roads are fairly narrow and the oncoming traffic may or may not be in your lane (You really have to keep an eye out for this!). It is very easy for a person to make a mistake on The Dragon, whether pushing too hard, or an inadvertant glance off to the side. Attention must be given at all times if you plan on making a run at speed! Fact of the matter is, if you want to try and push 10/10, then be fully prepared to pay for it.

I will not go into a diatribe about this, just read up on The Dragon and you will find out how dangerous of a road that it really can be,,,,,,gravel/sand, semi's, bikers, etc.

Cheers!

^^^ would you say that the 18-wheelers the the most dangerous due to their size and how they have to take turns??

Nope! If you are paying attention and looking ahead, you see them coming due to how slow that they have to go. I worried more about the "pocket rocket" biker that could not handle the corner he was diving into more than anything. They have such a high head-on velocity, that there is no time for correction

I heard that the limit used to be 55mph till the early 90's... Those were the days!! No airbags, no ABS, no DSC etc.

The world is becoming a nanny state!! All safety and no freedom. Didn't Ben Franklin say something to the tune of "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

It is temporary safety - we will all die no matter what the speed limit is....

I can fully understand the speedl limit not being set at 55mph!!!!! Too many people would kill themselves trying to do the speed limit at all times. The corners are too sharp and the straights are too short to obtain a healthy, average speed of 55. I experienced brake fade during my second run, and can't imagine what "Johnny Boy" in his Uber Civic is experiencing trying to keep up with the "Big Dogs". I would have loved to trail behind the 2 Vettes that came out to play,,,, not sure if they pushed it or not, but it would have been interesting to see just how far behind they would have left me in the corners.

Try to hit the Cherhola Skyway while you're there, another great drive and really beautiful  . It's higher speed then the TOD, but you can still push your Z to the extreme in the corners... but if you make a mistake here... well lets just say it's a long way down!

Don't forget to post pics afterwards!!!

LOL, in the UK most of our windy roads are National Speed Limit, officially 60 mph but unofficially the sign means "NO LIMITS". There was a story in our local press about a family that got killed when they lost control of their car on a bend that was posted NSL, and maybe it should be reduced to 40 mph. When I learned to drive it was up to the driver to assess the appropriate speed for the road and conditions, and the speed limit is "not a target".

Here is a link to pictures of our day at the dragon, if anyone would like to check them out. I hope this works.

I drove the Dragon this morning. It was Outstanding!! The drive on 129 up from Robbinsville is a great warm up. I was on the Dragon by about 7:30am. Very little traffic. No patrols. Great Time.
