Switching over private plates

Howdy

As mentioned on the other thread I'm buying PaulG's Zed.

At the moment he's got private plates on it and it needs switching back to the original, with the appropriate V5 etc before I can get my mitts on it.

In your experience, how long does this usually take? After some googling I've had responses of everything from 5 mins to 6 weeks :cry: . The 10 mins option is out as [as far as I know anyway] the DVLA office in Manchester closed last year.

I feel like a kid on Christmas eve...and the suns out... :driving:
 
Done it a few times now, has always been a 5 minute thing at the local DVLA office (also now closed) - they provide you with a certificate to get the new plates done. V5 takes a couple of weeks to come back in the post though; it has to go off to Swansea to be re-issued.
 
Why do it in 2 steps?

just take the old plate off and apply your new one in one transaction. If not it will take weeks to flow through the postal system twice.

Not sure what you mean? I assume that physically he still has the old plates, but surely I'll need a new V5 with the correct [non personalised] plate numbers on? I'm not buying a car without a V5 that matches the plates, even from a trusted forum member :P
 
#69 had private plates on when I bought her. Part of the bill of sale stated that the previous owner was not selling the plates with the car etc and I took it away with his plates and the old plates in the boot. As soon as he phoned to say the paperwork was done I swapped them back and dropped his plates off to him. And picked up the paperwork. Nothing to stop you doing the same and posting the old ones back if he wants them.
 
When I bought my car, the previous owner had a PP on it. He didn't have another car to transfer it to, so we both signed copies of a receipt that said something to the effect of "private plate not included in sale and will be returned to seller within 30 days". We also filled out the paperwork for registration change, and posted it together.

I drove the car on his PP until I got a notice in the mail that the transfer had been done, at which point I removed his PP from the car and put the normal plates on.
 
I've sold a car with my PP on in the past, as said, it needs to be on the receipt and it helps if you trust who your dealing with :thumbsup:

Ooh this could be a result - I'll give PaulG a ring tomorrow and see if he's up for doing that.

I've no interest in running off with his plates.

Edit: How would this effect the V5 though? I'd take the new owner supplement, so would the seller send the V5 with the private plate, and then ask at the same time for the ownership transfer *and* reg switch?

I'm a bit confused - never messed around with private plates before..
 
Would he want his old plates returning? You agree to destroy and he puts his registration number on his new car with new plates.

Not sure. He only lives 15 mins down the road so I wouldn't mind dropping them off anyway. Its not the physical plates that matter, its the paperwork :?
 
Just going through this with Raify at the moment, he's kindly quickly sent off the paperwork so ill let you know when I get to collect the car :)

We looked at the idea of selling with the PP and me retaining it back to him, however I think he would have to put it on a car within a year else it comes back to me for retainer renewal.

Hence, safest way seems to be the long wait. Thankfully all we need is the registration documents back (tax/mot etc) and a receipt will act as ownership transfer, the v5 can be sent to be updated whenever it comes back as its merely the registered keeper document (not proof of ownership).
 
As the seller of the car, I am a bit confused by this thread. The options seems to be:

1) Sell the car with the plate & then have the buyer transfer my plate back

2) Send the documentation to retain the plate and when all that comes through (including V5), exchange money & car

3) Send the documentation to retain the plate and as soon as the tax disc & authorisation (v948), exchange money and car, then I would fill in the V5 when it came back

Any other options ?

(1) risks me losing my plate (although I have no reason to doubt the buyer)

(2) looks like it could take 7-10 working days

(3) has the buyer trusting me to fill in the V5 and me trusting the buyer to accept any traffic tickets etc.

Such a nightmare.

I've just swapped PP over from my old Z onto my new one. Completed all the relevant docs and handed them into my local DVLA office. New V5's were back to me in 2 weeks.
 
your local dvla office will advize on this procedure ,get your own plates put on retention a new set of plates will be issued for the car , normally the original plate. takes all but 10 minutes . As the dvla have the paper work the pp plate can be removed from car.
 
OK - after having read the documents on the DVLA website, I think this may work:

Seller would give the buyer the V5C/2 (new keepers details) for the car.

Simultaneously, the buyer would fill in section 2 of V317 (retention document) as he would have the V5C/2 (New keepers details). Section 4 would be filled in that he didn't want to be the grantee, seller would be the grantee - meaning the seller keeps the plate.

The buyer would also need to fill in a V62 - application for a registration certificate. The V317 & V62 & V5C/2 would get sent off in one envelope, but i don't think the seller would send off the rest of V5 as the point of the V62 is to get the buyer the V5. It looks like the only fee payable would be for the retention of the plate.

Any comments ?

In the process of getting my plates moved onto the Evoque! DVLA have sure made this a lot more complicated than it used to be!! :?

I had a PP about 10 years ago and it was a right PITA even then. So I left the plates on the car as I didn't have another Car to put them onto. I can't get them back now as they must have gone back on retention as they seem to be out of the system. Only way I could trace them would be the PNC which I'm not privvy to. :(
