Switching over a Num Plate

Hey all,

Im thinking of selling up and just wondered what the time frame was to do the whole private plate switch/retention fandango.

Is it worth advertising the car until ive done the DVLA thing or just stick it on the market and then get things underway if i get a buyer?
 
Hi - it took 3 weeks from application to getting the log book back - was also surprised that I got the original registration number back.

So I'd kick off the paperwork now with the DVLA

Hey Barry, was that to do retention or to switch onto another car?

Im a bit p'eed of at the thought of paying £80 to have the number plate just 'on hold' until i find another car but dont want to be under pressure to find the next one. :(
 
I seem to recall you pay to put it on retention for a year and then it's free to put on your next car.

Personally I'd kick the process off now so you have right reg plates and all sorted and it doesn't put off a buyer waiting for log books changed mot tax disc, etc.

That doesnt sound too bad then, thought i would have to pay AGAIN to put it on another car.

Looks like i'll be MOT'ing and getting the ball rollling then.

Go to dvla.gov.uk and search something like registration number retention and loads of PDF's appear from the rules and regulations to transfer application forms, list of offices, etc.

Easy peasy and done it loads of times.
 
I thought it was £80 for the transfer process and £25 for the 1 year retention (or £25 for every year you retain it)

So even if you did a straight swap with no retention you still have to pay £80.

My last car i got the dealer to transfer my plate over (and cover the cost) but with the Z it was just easier to put it on retention.. then i had the year to get the plate over.
 
Retention is £105 1yr and £130 & £155 for 2 & 3 years.

You'd have to search the DVLA for current figures for all the combinations.

So if do a direct swap its £80
If you retain it for one year is £80+25 and then £25 for each additional year.
 
I got to keep the personalised plate that #69 was sporting when I bought her for a few weeks as there were admin delays. Personally, I thought a Z4 with an XJS number plate just looked wrong. See profile pic for evidence!

put my old plate on retention when I sold the old z4 took all docs into local dvla office 2 weeks later got new log book
so all in all quite quick

If you can get your documents to the DVLA office in Birmingham (Garretts Green industrial estate), they will do it there and then. I'm going down to swap plates on 3 cars, so my plate goes on the Z, her plate on the Type R, and original plate on the Accord so I can get rid. The only charge for private plates, not putting the original reg onto the Accord, so it'll cost £160.
