Swapping DME / ECU on an E85 2003

My Z4 E85 3.0 from 2003 has currently some issues showing a rough idling which makes it impossible to drive te car. The throttle body has already been replaced (without solving the issue) and one of the other suspects is the DME / ECU. Following advice of some fellow forum members and a Z3/Z4 specialist, I am gonna try swapping the DME with a used one to rule this out. I have managed to find a starter set including EWS, keys and lock/ringantenna. This DME is also from an E85 with 3.0 liter M54 engine with manual transmission (MS45.0).

I do have, however, a whole bunch of questions about swapping the DME so I thought it would be better to start a dedicated topic. Link to the trouble shooting topic is here:

I was told that the easiest way for swapping the DME is to put also the EWS in there, together with the ring antenna and the "new" key (belonging to the kit); the key and ring antenna can be tucked away somewhere under the dashboard. This means that the EWS will find the original key and will give no issues. The "old" key is still used in the ignition to start the car, as well as for locking/unlocking of the car. You will, however, loose the immobilizer feature.

Now my questions are:
- What happens to the mileage? Obviously, the mileage shown in the cluster does not correspond to the mileage saved in the new DME/EWS (if it is saved there too). Will it just show the cluster mileage or will it take the highest value of cluster/DME/EWS? Is there any risk of getting something like a tampering light/dot? The ECU replacement is to rule this out as a potential cause (or solve it, of course), but I don't want to take any risk to devalue my car...

- With the procedure described above for the ringantenna, I assume you don't need to remove the software link between the DME and EWS. I have read though that you should register the car's VIN to the new DME. How should this be done? And can you drive without doing this?

- With the DME and EWS replaced, can the old keys still be used to remotely lock/unlock the car? Are the keys communicating with the GM5 module directly instead of the EWS/DME?

Looking forward to any feedback. Thanks!

Honestly? Not sure but that sounds hellish complicated. As I said, drop in a compatible DME, tell it not to talk to the EWS and you’re sorted. The mileage is in the instrument cluster (IKE) and the light control module (LCM). So that shouldn’t be an issue.
Put the correct VIN in the new DME, tell it to hide from the EWS and away you go.

Thanks guys for the swift response. Glad to hear that replacing the ECU won't mess with the mileage.

Got the replacement DME, but will be back home on Saturday. I am in touch with Bigwinn to figure out how to delete the EWS link.

Will post my findings here when it is all sorted out.

Good luck

EWS delete will take minutes with MS454 QuickFlash.

Don't waste your time programming the VIN on the replacement ECU, it's plays no part in the operation of the ECU.
