Swapping a Halogen headlight into a Xenon Zed

So met a guy yesterday who swapped out his xenon’s (unknowingly) and fitted the sonar/2xcite stuff. Not really a fan of them…OEM is better. I do like the clear LCI ones. But I digress.

So it’s been fitted since Covid era. So we’re talking 2020/2021. And obviously it’s not been an issue with the old MOT.

My question is why? Would the auto level function mean that it will self level? And therefore it doesn’t need the adjustment wheel? Also I know the xenon have 8 pins. While halogen’s are only 7 pin. So surely a function is lost because that 1 pin isn’t there?

Nope, they are motorised but there is no auto-level function on the Sonar ones.

Self-levelling isn't required for halogens. So if they're too high use the fixed adjuster to adjust down. If they're not too high they will pass MOT.

Okay well that’s half the answer. If I put BMW halogens in my car, what then? Would they level? Since they do have an adjustable motor. From what I’ve read a stepper motor?

The servo motor arrangement in the headlights is the same for both halogen and xenon. Whether they auto level or manual level is entirely down to which LCM is fitted (and having the leveling sensors, natch.)

So, put halogens in a xenon car and, voilà, instant auto level.

The extra pin in an HID connector is the shutter control line for the bi-xenon.
